Job Summary
Reports to the Mass General Hospital (MGH) Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Manager. The incumbents knowledge skills and experience in the field of safety and strong interpersonal skills will be utilized to provide in-depth technical and program support over a wide range of department functions with an emphasis on proactively eliminating hazards in the hospital and laboratory environment. The Fire & Life Safety Officer (FLSO) interacts with staff of all levels in clinical research and support departments to assist with safety and regulatory compliance. The FLSO routinely liaises local and state authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) on behalf of MGH for inspections and other matters related to regulatory licensing permitting and compliance.
- Assists in developing and communicating safety policies and procedures related to fire life safety and construction safety.
- Provides safety training to MGH staff and vendors based on regulations and established policies and procedures.
- Leads safety audits in assigned organizational sectors in clinical research and active construction settings. Assures the effective communication of audit results and tracks program performance. Assists leadership and staff in hazard mitigation.
- Interfaces with staff contractors and vendors on matters related to environmental health and safety.
- Interfaces with local authorities on behalf of MGH.
- Assists in the maintenance of applicable regulatory licenses permits certificates etc.
- Assists in managing the personal protective equipment (PPE) program. Consults on PPE selection and provides training on proper management use and disposal.
- Supports the emergency preparedness and response capabilities of the EH&S department. Responds to emergencies as required.
- Represents the EH&S department on various committees and meetings related to fire life safety and construction safety.
- Maintains technical competencies based on job demands. Keeps knowledgeable of pertinent codes standards and guidelines.
- Supports EH&S department needs and project work as assigned.

- Associates degree with 3 years of safety experience; preferably in a healthcare or laboratory setting.
- Must be thoroughly familiar with industry regulations and guidelines especially the Massachusetts Building Code Massachusetts Fire Code NFPA 101 Life Safety Code and NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Code.
- Strong interpersonal skills; verbal and written communication skills; Ability to interact effectively with people individually and in small groups; must handle conflict tactfully and constructively
- Capable of performing tasks while wearing a respirator and/or other personal protective equipment.
- Ability to recognize safety risks and apply safety controls which demonstrate risk reduction or elimination.
- Presentation skills; ability to deliver training presentations to varied audiences of varied sizes.
- Flexibility and teamwork: the EHS department has a broad set of responsibilities requiring all technical staff to multitask and support other team members.
- Computer competency with general office software.
- Physically able to perform tasks such as walking standing climbing lifting carrying
- Must manage frequently shifting priorities and constant change; must usually attend to a variety of simultaneous tasks
- Periodically required to work off-hours; occasionally required to respond to urgent matters with short notice on regular and off-hours
- Periodically work in hazardous environments wearing appropriate personal protective equipment
- Periodically be on-call on a rotating basis
