Job summary What to expect:

As the Analytical Manager in our R&D Chemistry department you will lead activities within R&D and engage in frequent communication with project managers so that tasks are effectively managed to meet the overall project goals whilst holding responsibility for direct reports.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Manage functional team in support of project objectives to achieve effective transfer of new technologies/products into production and to achieve planned product/process objectives
  • Ensuring that your technical knowledge and capability remains at the cutting edge of your discipline
  • Analyse and challenge own and others results draw conclusions and recommend future direction
  • Present work at meetings both internal and external to the department when required
  • Ensure that technical concepts are adequately protected by robust patent filings and that work streams are free from competitor intellectual property.
  • Provide technical direction to develop and implement new technologies and products that will provide significant business benefits and establish and maintain relationships with other departments outside of R&D
  • Liaise and communicate effectively with suppliers to ensure timely supply at optimum quality and cost (where appropriate) and recommend appropriate vendors to the project manager/senior management for approval
  • Ensure that functional area complies with business quality systems. Ensure all documentation is in place and up-to-date
  • Lead continuous improvement projects in own and other work areas. Champion continuous improvement on site and assist in the implementation of robust improvement projects to yield timely understanding in relation to project goals

About you:

We are looking for someone with:

  • Effective teamwork and leadership skills.
  • Proven ability to manage own and others workload effectively and plan accordingly.
  • Expertise in analytical chemistry including mass spectrometry and advanced chromatography.
  • Chartered Status advantageous
  • Excellent experimentalist
  • Enthusiasm and Drive
  • Understanding of project management principles.
  • Understanding of contact lens chemistry
  • Understanding of lens manufacturing and 6-sigma
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral
  • Ability to read and understand highly technical material.
  • Technical Report writing experience.
  • Data analysis and presenting.
  • Knowledge of advanced statistical techniques.
  • Self-direction: Ability to work independently on multiple often conflicting priorities.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Flexibility in accepting work assignments as required by the needs of the business.

Work Environment:

  • The individual will be required to work in offices clean rooms manufacturing areas and laboratories. The job holder may also be required to work at other Coopervision sites and travel abroad if required.
  • Flexibility in working hours is required e.g. to meet deadlines i.e. working early/late/outside of normal hours. The role is an exempt salaried position and does not pay overtime.
  • The role will require the individual to come into contact with hazardous materials or working environments. The individual will be required to wear/use the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for the task in hand outlined in SOPs including items such as lab coat eye protection and gloves. The job requires the handling of materials that come under COSHH guidelines.

Experience & Education:

Required

  • Intermediate skill in the use of Excel Word and PowerPoint
  • Minimum of 3 years experience working in an analytical laboratory depending on degree level
  • Minimum 2 years supervisory experience
  • Proven working knowledge of GMP/GLP is essential.
  • Bachelor of Science degree with minimum 8 years experience in Chemistry or related field
  • Master of Science degree with minimum 6 years experience in Chemistry or related field
  • Ph.D. with minimum 3 years experience in Chemistry or related field

Preferred

  • Mass spectrometry knowledge advantageous
  • Advanced skill in the use of Excel Word and PowerPoint preferred.
  • Experience of working to FDA standards preferable.
