Southeastern Virginia Training Center (SEVTC) a facility within the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services (DBHDS) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Activities Assistant to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This role is responsible for providing structured day support services that promote independence skill development and meaningful engagement both on campus and in the community.

The Activities Assistant plays a key role in delivering person-centered support that enhance quality of life encourages community integration and foster ongoing skill advancement.

All new hires must successfully complete the facilitys Pre-service training program for Direct Support Professional Staff to include Person Centered Approach techniques CPR/First Aid Certification Therapeutic Options medication administration nutritional management and physical/behavioral management for continued employment.

About the Role

  • Plan develop and implement individualized day support programs aligned with each individuals Support Plan.
  • Facilitate skill-building activities including communication daily living skills recreation vocational readiness and community integration.
  • Provide direct coaching support and supervision during day support programming.
  • Conducts house 1:1 and group training sessions; assists other ID team members in conducting programs.
  • Complete accurate documentation such as progress notes data tracking and daily logs in compliance with CMS DBHDS and facility standards.
  • Implement behavior support strategies and ensure safety across all program settings.
  • Support community outings recreational activities and transportation needs.
  • Participate in meetings required training and ongoing program development.

Additional Information:

  • This position is hourly/wage and not eligible for benefits. Hourly (wage) employees may not work more than 29 hours a week and are limited to working 1500 hours in a year.
  • This position is considered essential personnel and will be required to report to work during facility needs or emergencies.
  • All new hires must complete a 13-day Pre-Service Training Program (8:00 AM 4:30 PM daily).

Schedule/Hours:

  • Sunday 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
  • Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Skills and experience required:

  • Ability to write and verbally communicate effectively in a clear and concise manner. Communicate significant information to other ID team members and record data using electronic health records.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Ability to work independently while carrying out instructions and directives.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality with sensitive and highly confidential matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and perform tasks independently.
  • Ability to organize and maintain workflow efficiently.
  • Ability to document information using MS Office products and spreadsheets.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work accurately with details.
  • Ability to maintain and organize health information within the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Experience in a day activity program prevocational vocational training and Recreation Therapy setting.
  • Experienced or has knowledgeable in securing individuals in vehicles using seat belts and the 7-point safety straps system for individuals using wheelchairs
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid drivers license.

Bonus points if you have:

  • Knowledge of Medicaid licensure standards.
  • General knowledge of behavior modification techniques; and the ability to apply them during Day Support/Vocational training sessions.
  • Familiarity with community inclusion and engagement activities.
