Position Summary:

Provide daily maintenance and care of plants within our Sustainable Living Center greenhouse and the Library Greenhouse. This role involves various tasks to ensure optimal plant health and growth and maintain the cleanliness and organization of the greenhouse.

Experience Gained / Advantageous for the Student:

  • Hands-on experience in plant care and greenhouse management building a solid foundation in horticultural practices.
  • Opportunity to learn about plant biology pest management and integrated pest management techniques gaining practical knowledge applicable to various fields within agriculture and environmental science.
  • Development of organizational and record-keeping skills through maintaining detailed records of plant care activities and managing greenhouse supplies.
  • Enhancement of teamwork and collaboration skills with the potential to work alongside other greenhouse attendants and staff to ensure the smooth operation of greenhouse activities.
  • Exposure to sustainable living practices and principles within the context of greenhouse operations contributing to a broader understanding of environmental stewardship and sustainability initiatives.
  • Contribute to the natural beauty that enhances tranquility throughout MIUs campus environment showcasing the importance of environmental stewardship and the integration of nature into campus life.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Monitor and care for plants by watering pruning and transplanting as necessary. Ensure that plants receive adequate light water and nutrients.

2. Identify and manage pests and diseases to maintain plant health. This may involve the application of pesticides or other integrated pest management techniques.

3. Maintain records of plant care activities including watering schedules fertilizer applications pesticide applications and any issues encountered.

4. Keep the greenhouse clean and organized including cleaning plant trays tools and work areas. Perform routine maintenance on greenhouse equipment as needed.

5. Track and manage supplies such as soil fertilizers and pots. Order supplies as needed and ensure that they are stored properly.

Job Qualifications:

  • Interest in working with plants and a keenness to learn on the job. On-the-job training and learning opportunities provided.
  • Knowledge of horticulture plant biology pest management and/or greenhouse operations is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to perform physical labor including lifting up to 50 pounds and standing for extended periods.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
