Job Summary

The Position

Class Code 28345: Recreation Specialist

Transfer job postings are for County of Sacramento employees only.
In order to be qualified for a transfer:

1. You must meet the Minimum Qualifications of the new job.
2. The difference between the top salary steps (the highest pay rate within the range of pay) of your current job class and the job class that you intend to transfer into must be less than 5%.

There are three different transfer types that you may qualify for: interdepartmental transfer interclass transfer and voluntary demotion. These different transfer types are defined as:

  • Interdepartmental transfer - a transfer in the same class from one County department to another.
  • Interclass transfer - a transfer from one job class to a different job addition the difference between the top salary steps (the highest pay rate within the range of pay) of your current job class and the job class that you intend to transfer into must be less than 5%.
  • Voluntary demotion - a transfer into a job class that pays less than 95% of your current class salary.
If you are requesting an interclass transfer or voluntary demotion either action is a change in class. Whether the change is a transfer or a demotion depends upon the difference between the maximum salary rates of the requested and incumbent classes. Personnel Ordinance Section 2.78.294 or the applicable labor agreement sets the criteria for determining the maximum difference allowed. Personnel Ordinance Section 2.78.228 defines demotion.

Under general supervision Recreation Specialists plan promote organize implement and evaluate recreational activities special events and fundraisers at parks and recreational facilities including sports picnics camps cultural and handicrafts for the diverse county population. Incumbents supervise part-time and seasonal staff and volunteers in organizing and planning recreational activities; and may be assigned to specialized recreation functions.

  • Plan organize publicize and conduct a wide range of recreation activities and events
  • Direct assign supervise train and evaluate seasonal staff and volunteers
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with media representatives public officials special interest groups and other organizations
  • Write and design advertising and promotional materials to stimulate participation and support for recreational activities and events
  • Speak clearly and effectively in public
  • Communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing
  • Maintain records on recreation activities and prepare reports

Employment Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of experience and education or training that is likely to provide the required Knowledges and Abilities for this class as described above; typical qualifying experience is:

Either: 1. Three years of full time experience in the class of Recreation Leader in Sacramento County service.

Or: 2. Completion of all major coursework from an accredited college or university required for a Bachelors Degree or higher in Recreation. Paid or volunteer experience in organizing and conducting recreation programs may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Or: 3. Completion of all major coursework from an accredited four year college or university required for a Bachelors Degree or higher in Physical Education AND EITHER 30 semester units or 45 quarter units in recreation OR one year of paid or volunteer experience organizing and conducting recreation programs.

Note: All experience requirements are stated in terms of full-time experience; part-time experience is acceptable and is converted to full-time on the basis of: 173.6 hours 21.7 days 1 work month.

Note: If the word experience is referenced in the minimum qualifications it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.

Special Requirements

Drivers License:
Positions in these classes require possession of a valid State of California Driver License Class III or higher at the time of appointment. Failure to maintain appropriate valid California Driver License constitutes cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rule 11.4.

Criminal History Check:
The County may access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment for this class consistent with the provisions of Board of Supervisors Resolution No. 82-602 Personnel Policies and Procedure B-5 and applicable Federal and State law. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidates ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist. For purposes of accessing criminal history information the candidate will be fingerprinted. A subsequent arrest notification may be obtained.
