Role Overview
As the Retail Operations & Merchandising Manager you are the primary driver of the fans physical shopping experience. You are responsible for the total lifecycle of our merchandise- from in-house production using our DTF and embroidery machines to the front-line execution of sales.
Your mission is to ensure that every retail touchpoint is perfectly branded fully staffed and optimized for maximum revenue. You are the boots on the ground leader in charge of:
- Gameday Execution: Full ownership of merchandise setup teardown and stadium retail logistics for Portland Pickles Portland Cherry Bombs FC and Portland Bangers FC.
- Visual Merchandising: Decorating and promoting the store and stands to create an immersive must-buy environment.
- Staff Leadership: Recruiting training and managing the team that represents our brands to the fans.
- Product Creation: Operating in-house machinery to turn blanks into high-demand finished goods.
Key Responsibilities:
Retail & Gameday Operations
- Site Management: Lead the setup decoration and teardown of all physical retail environments at our three team The Portland Pickles Portland Bangers FC and Portland Cherry Bombs FC and external spaces including The Pickle Jar flagship store and new warehouse storefront coming soon.
- Promotion: Execute on-site marketing and visual merchandising strategies to highlight new drops and featured items.
- Staffing: Hire onboard and schedule a high-performing retail team; provide on-the-floor coaching to ensure elite customer service. Oversee schedule all hourly employees for external stores and gamedays.
- POS & Tech: Ensure all payment systems and hardware are prepped and functional for every event.
In-House Product Creation
- Machine Operation: Master the operation maintenance and daily workflow of our in-house DTF printing and embroidery machines.
- Production: Manage the end-to-end creation of merchandise using blanks provided by the Warehouse team to meet real-time demand.
- Quality Control: Ensure every piece of Made in Portland gear meets our high standards for brand integrity and durability.
Warehouse & Inventory Coordination
- Cross-Team Collaboration: Work in lockstep with the Warehouse Manager to receive restocks verify transfer counts and maintain the single source of truth for inventory.
- Sales Feedback Loop: Maintain constant communication with the warehouse team regarding sales velocity informing them of what is moving fast and what needs reordering.
- Replenishment Strategy: Proactively request inventory transfers based on upcoming homestands events and flagship store trends to prevent stockouts.
Goals & Deliverables
- Communication Accuracy: Ensure 100% of transfers received from the warehouse are reconciled and reported within 24 hours.
- Operational Readiness: 100% on-time completion of store/booth setups with zero tech or staffing failures.
- Production Targets: Maintain a fluid production queue that prevents stockouts on core printed-on-demand items.
- Retail Excellence: Meet or exceed targets for Sales Per Game and Store Revenue through proactive merchandising.
Qualifications
- Experience: 3 years in retail management event merchandising and/or apparel production.
- Technical Aptitude: Experience with (or a high aptitude for) apparel production machinery (DTF Embroidery Heat Press) and Shopify POS.
- Leadership: Proven ability to manage a team and coordinate complex logistics across multiple sites.
- Communication: Exceptional ability to work cross-functionally with warehouse and front-office teams.
- Physicality: Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and remain active in a fast-paced environment.
