Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this position exists isto provide essential animal care through specific duties such as feedingcleaning and general husbandry of the zoos live animal collections. This roleis highly labor intensive and requires a commitment to the welfare of work responsibilities include but are not limited toobserving animal behavior and health accurately recording observations inreports preparing appropriate diets administering medications as needed andmaintaining the facilities and exhibits to ensure a safe clean and enjoyableenvironment for everyone. The Zookeeper I is differentiated from the Zookeeper IIby their level of involvement with the animals. Incumbents in thisclassification will gain diverse experience by rotating among various sectionsas needed. Supervision is received from the Zookeeper II the Assistant GeneralCurator the Conservation & Enrichment Manager and the General Curator.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma orG.E.D. and six (6) months of professional animal care experience in a zoosetting or one (1) year of animal care experience as a paid professionaltechnical employee or as a supervised volunteer in an organization that buyssells or maintains exotic and/or domestic animals.

NOTE: Qualifying education training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements

Must be able to tolerate working under difficultconditions to include extreme heat and cold and deadlines as needed to care foranimal collection and maintain be able to stoop climb walk run and crawl. Must be able to lift heavy objects such asfood bundles hay or food bags weighing up to 60 pounds unassisted. Must be able to work weekends and holidays. Must have and maintain a valid Alabama drivers licenseand an insurable driving record in order to drive city vehicles to pick up variousproduce and food items. Candidates willbe subject to a medical exam following a conditional job offer.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill three (3) vacancies and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register. The current vacancy is with theCity of Montgomery Zoo. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire. For this reason applicants are urged to fill in the application form and the supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held the dates they held them where and exactly what their duties were. If more than seven qualified applications are received the supplemental questionnaire will be used to rank applicants. Tied scores will not be there are seven or less qualified applicants they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
