Project Summary

The Speechwriter will support the National Science Foundations (NSF) Office of Legislative and Public Affairs (OLPA) by developing high-quality speeches remarks and leadership messaging that communicate NSFs mission priorities and the impact of federally funded research. This role supports senior NSF leadership by translating complex scientific technical and policy information into clear compelling narratives tailored to diverse audiences including Congress the research community and the public.

The position supports a federal government communications contract and operates in a high-visibility environment requiring accuracy discretion and adherence to federal writing and accessibility standards.

Role Summary

The Speechwriter develops speeches remarks and leadership messaging for NSF senior leadership translating complex scientific and technical information into clear compelling narratives. The individual works closely with leadership subject-matter experts and communications staff to ensure messaging is accurate timely and aligned with NSFs voice and strategic communications objectives.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Draft speeches talking points remarks leadership messages internal communications congressional testimony and presentations for NSF leadership.
  • Synthesize information from internal and external sources into compelling accurate and accessible narratives.
  • Tailor messaging for varied audiences including Congress scientific associations academic stakeholders and other NSF audiences.
  • Develop communications plans engagement strategies and messaging to advance NSFs mission and activities.
  • Produce senior-level communications products that articulate and explain complex NSF science programs and research findings.
  • Edit materials to conform to the voice tone and style of NSF leadership.
  • Ensure written products comply with the Plain Writing Act of 2010 and Section 508 accessibility requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five (5) or more years of professional speechwriting experience.
  • Strong research interviewing and editorial skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience researching and fact-checking content through interviews with subject-matter experts and program officials.

Preferred Strengths

  • Experience writing for science research technology or policy leaders.
  • Proven ability to translate complex scientific or technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
  • Experience supporting speeches remarks or testimony for federal or academic leadership.

Work Location and Schedule

  • Place of Performance: Primarily on-site at NSF Headquarters in Alexandria VA.
  • Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. 5:00 p.m.
  • Telework may be permitted with prior approval from the Contracting Officers Representative (COR).

Security Requirement

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
