Job Summary
The Associate Agricultural/Weights and Measures Inspector participates in a structured training program designed to build proficiency in agricultural inspection and weights and measures enforcement. This role supports public health consumer protection and agricultural standards through field inspections enforcement activities and detailed reporting. The position involves hands-on inspection work use of specialized equipment and application of scientific and mathematical principles to ensure compliance with regulations.
Essential Job Functions

Participate in rotational training covering agricultural inspection and weights and measures enforcement

Inspect fruits vegetables and eggs for quality and compliance with standards

Inspect plants plant materials nursery stock produce cases and packaged goods for pests weight and labeling accuracy

Enforce pesticide use regulations and assist in pest and weed control activities
-
Detect and support eradication efforts for exotic and invasive pests
-
Inspect commercial meters scales and measuring devices for accuracy
-
Prepare inspection reports certificates citations and notices of violation
-
Use inspection tools and equipment such as refractometers scales graduated measures hydrometers and mobile computing devices

Safely operate tools and equipment used in inspection investigation and enforcement activities

Apply mathematical formulas including algebra in inspection and enforcement work
Minimum Qualifications
-
Option I: Bachelors degree in agricultural science biological science chemical science physical science mathematics statistics or a closely related field

Option II: Bachelors degree in any discipline with at least 30 semester units (or equivalent) in agricultural science biological science chemical science physical science mathematics or statistics and one year of experience performing agricultural or weights and measures inspections for a public agency
Licenses & Certifications

Valid California weights and measures license (Weight Verification or Measurement Verification)

Valid California agricultural license in Pest Prevention and Plant Regulation (to be obtained within one year of appointment)

Valid California Class C Driver License or ability to meet transportation requirements for job duties
Physical Requirements

Ability to perform field inspections including lifting and inspecting items weighing 25 pounds or more

Capability to work outdoors and in varied environments while safely conducting inspection and enforcement activities
