SDU Microelectronics part of institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applications for a 3-year PhD position within Wearable Design and Mutli-Modal Monitoring of Brain Disorders. The position is open from May and the specific start date will be agreed with the successful candidates.

Research area and project description

Current seizure detection relies heavily on EEG but we believe we can do better. NeuroEar aims to use multimodal monitoring to significantly enhance seizure detection and prediction accuracy.

This PhD project focuses on designing and testing high-quality electronics (both discrete and integrated) and participate in clinical studies at the Danish Epilepsy Centre (Filadelfia) to validate the device on patients. You will also spend 3 months at Georgia Tech/Emory University (USA) working on machine learning and data benchmarking.

Work description

The selected PhD student will be responsible for the full development of the multimodal neuromonitoring system. Tasks will include:

  • Integrating a discrete impedance measurement prototype into an existing in-ear earpiece equipped with an EEG sensor.
  • Conducting clinical/feasibility studies at the Danish Epilepsy Centre (Filadelfia) and using ML and AL to process the data.
  • Designing and implementing a low-power impedance integrated circuit suitable for wearable in-ear devices to further advance the practical everyday use of the technology.

Qualifications

Applicants should hold a MSc in electronics computer engineering biomedical engineering Physics or a closely related field.

Required Qualification

  • Solid background in electronic hardware design including experience with PCB design and off-the-shelf components.
  • Solid background in analog/mixed-signal ultra-low power CMOS circuit design including experience with amplifiers and bias circuits.
  • Solid background in using machine learning and AI for data processing.
  • Experience with industry-standard EDA tools such as Cadence Virtuoso Spectre or Mentor Graphics.
  • Understanding of semiconductor device physics especially MOSFET operation modeling and scaling.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with layout and tape-out of CMOS chips.

Conditions of enrollment/employment

Appointment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position and the monthly gross salary incl. pension is 36.608 DKK. If you have relevant postgraduate experience you may be placed on a higher salary step.

The preferred start date is from May 1 2026.
