Description of Work

The primary purpose of this position is to oversee all functions of the Student Life Program including supervision of staff administrative responsibilities and program planning. This position ensures that activities are developed and implemented that enhance the education of the students at NCSD during after-school hours and that Student Life staff have the training and support needed to provide a safe and secure environment for all students.

Job Summary

The Student Life Director at the NC School for the Deaf is responsible for the overall development implementation and supervision of a comprehensive residential and extracurricular program that fosters a positive and enriching environment for students. This role ensures the safety well-being and personal growth of all students outside of academic hours.

Job Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Program Development & Management:

  • Design implement and evaluate a diverse range of student life programs activities and events (e.g. recreational social cultural athletic leadership development) that align with the schools mission and the needs of Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the residential dormitories ensuring a safe supportive and structured living environment.
  • Enforce student codes of conduct NCSD policies and disciplinary procedures in collaboration with the Dean of Students Dean of Education and Superintendent.
  • Plan and manage the student life budget allocating resources effectively and ensuring fiscal responsibility.
  • Coordinate student transportation for activities medical appointments and home visits as needed.

Supervision & Staff Development:

  • Recruit hire grow and evaluate student life trainers activity coordinators and other student life personnel. And the third bullet to read: Foster open and transparent communication and a supportive team environment within the student life department with the academic department and with leadership.
  • Provide ongoing professional development opportunities for student life staff focusing on best practices in working with crisis intervention and behavior management.
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment within the student life department.

Student Support & Well-being:

  • Act as a primary point of contact for students regarding residential concerns personal issues and general well-being.
  • Collaborate with academic staff counselors and health services to provide holistic support for students.
  • Implement strategies to promote student independence self-advocacy and social-emotional development.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations licensing requirements and school policies.

Communication & Collaboration:

  • Maintain transparent and effective communication with leadership and parents/guardians and collaborate with the academic department to integrate student life programming I the overall NCSD educational experience. Represent the student life department at leadership and school-wide meetings community events and professional engagements.
  • Represent the student life department at school meetings community events and professional conferences.


Management Preferences:

  • Ability to use American Sign Language (ASL) to effectively communicate with deaf students parents and staff.
  • Native or near native fluency in ASL.


Minimum Education and Experience

Required Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelors degree in child development special education or education from an appropriately accredited institution AND
  • Four (4) years of experience in the delivery of services to the population served in a residential program or in a goal-oriented program setting two of which must have been supervisory or managerial in nature.

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

About the North Carolina School for the Deaf:

The North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD) is a specialty school for Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students ages 3 (three) to 22 (twenty-two) with a catchment area encompassing the 46 westernmost counties in North Carolina. Established in 1894 the school provided significant milestones in deaf and blind Carolina School for the Deaf operates per the academic calendar from August to May with additional summer programming in June. Students are typically present on campus Sunday afternoons through Friday general support services and administration operate year-round. Pursuant to House Bill 11 all employees hired in classified (and certified) positions on or after July 1 2024 are employed pursuant to Chapter 115C
of the General Statutes. This includes any transfers to NCSD for a current state employee who are currently considered Chapter 126 (SPA) employees.

Recruitment Salary Range $50882 to $55595 - Dependent on qualifying education and relevant experience.

This position is designated Mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.

Supplemental Information:

NCSD uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject and not subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals. Hiring salary will be based on relevant qualifications internal equity and budgetary considerations pertinent to the advertised position.
