Under the supervision of the Maintenance Manager of Facilities Planning and Control performs skilled journey-level air conditioning and heating work in the construction installation trouble shooting repair alteration and maintenance of a variety of air conditioning and heating systems. Provides hands-on maintenance operation and troubleshooting of all Central Plant related equipment and pneumatic and direct digital controls. Performs other semi-skilled and skilled maintenance repair and construction tasks in the upkeep of the university facilities. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

An Associates degree from an accredited college or technical school in air-conditioning technology and two years of experience in heating ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) central plant operations.

Knowledge/Abilities:

Position requires knowledge of:

• Large heat exchangers chillers boilers cooling towers pumps and water treatment systems.
• Heat recovery and energy storage systems.
• Basic desktop computing.
• Electrical and plumbing systems.
• Energy Management Systems.
• Methods and practices of operating and maintaining a central plant.
• Operation and maintenance of heating ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) electrical systems and associated auxiliary equipment and systems.
• Water treatment as applied to central plant activities to include chemical testing and quantitative application of industrial chemicals.
• Hazards and safety precautions associated with central plant operations.
• Theory of operation of automated HVAC control systems.

Position requires ability to:

• Skillfully use a variety of tools and equipment utilized in one or more of the basic maintenance trades.
• Perform semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the basic building maintenance trades.
• Accurately interpret codes regulations policies and procedures pertaining to a variety of building maintenance tasks.
• Use hand and machine tools of the trade.
• Work from blueprints shop drawings and sketches.
• Maintain simple records and prepare reports.
• Interpret regulations policies and safety practices.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
• Work successfully in a multicultural environment.
• Work independently with little or no supervision.
• Maintain preventive maintenance programs.
• Install repair and maintain air conditioning and heating systems and all associated controls at the central plant and college facilities.
• Troubleshoot air conditioning heating refrigeration walk-ins reach-ins ice machines energy management and control systems.

Physical Job Requirements:

This position requires hand and digit dexterity to operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment specific to the trade; walking standing stooping kneeling crouching crawling twisting/turning and reaching in awkward positions to install and repair equipment; climbing stairs and ladders; pushing and pulling equipment; bending at the waist; working at heights of 50 feet or more on ladders scaffolds or field poles; working under buildings or in confined spaces; moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds); working indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures; vision to read printed materials and to identify and distinguish wiring and equipment; hearing and speech for normal communications; and travel from site-to-site. The ideal candidate must be able to perform and complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
