DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION

Buffalo Trail Public Schools (BTPS) is seeking a strategic results-driven Director of Transportation to provide system-level leadership for the Divisions student transportation this role you will support the Divisions mission of maximizing student learning in a safe and caring environment by ensuring students are transported reliably efficiently and safely across a geographically diverse rural service area.

Reporting to the Secretary-Treasurer the Director of Transportation plays a key leadership role in maintaining public confidence supporting schools and delivering high-quality transportation services that reflect both operational excellence and a strong service orientation.

Position Overview

The Director of Transportation is accountable for the planning coordination and delivery of student transportation services across the Division. The role provides system leadership for a complex multi-route transportation network delivered through contracted service providers.

Success in this position requires a balance of strategic oversight regulatory compliance financial stewardship and collaborative relationship-focused leadership with all stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

The Director of Transportation Services will provide leadership in the following areas:

  • Lead the administration and continuous improvement of the Divisions student transportation system
  • Develop recommend and implement transportation policies procedures and operational guidelines approved by the Board
  • Plan manage and regularly review transportation routes to ensure safety efficiency and cost-effectiveness
  • Provide oversight and direction to transportation contractors and drivers supporting accountability service quality and continuous improvement
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable Alberta transportation legislation regulations and industry standards
  • Develop monitor and manage the annual transportation budget including oversight of contractor payroll and accounts payable processes
  • Prepare transportation grant submissions and required operational financial and compliance reports
  • Conduct route reviews and on-site audits to support operational integrity and student safety
  • Oversee and optimize transportation-related technology and systems to support data-informed decision-making
  • Oversee the administration of the fleet of passenger vehicles controlled by Central Services
  • Collaborate with schools and system leaders on matters related to student transportation safety and service delivery
  • Remain current with evolving regulations technology and best practices through active engagement in the school bus industry
  • Participate in leadership and team development initiatives with school administrators and system leaders

Desired Qualifications & Experience

  • Leadership/Management level experience would be considered an asset; preferably in student transportation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Alberta education system and publicly funded school operations
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation and regulations including the Education Act Traffic Safety Act and Student Transportation Regulation as they relate to student transportation
  • Post-secondary education in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in transportation logistics operations or a related field is considered an asset
  • Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive trust-based relationships and work collaboratively with stakeholders
  • Confidence with office and transportation technology and systems; experience with BusPlanner software or comparable student transportation routing systems is considered an asset
  • A valid Alberta Class 2 operators license with Alberta S Endorsement Certification is considered an asset
  • Ability to work independently exercise sound professional judgment and manage confidential and sensitive information
  • Additional qualifications deemed appropriate by the Board will be considered
