NOTE: This is an FRA-covered position. FRA-covered employees are those employees who have been assigned to perform service subject to Hours of Service (HOS) and are therefore subject to a random pool for monthly drug and alcohol testing.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

To provide assistance to Signalmen in the construction and maintenance of crossing signals wayside signals defect detectors battery plants battery charging systems and other miscellaneous signal devices.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Assists in the construction and maintenance of highway crossing signals wayside signals defect detectors battery plants battery charging systems and other miscellaneous signal devices.

Assists Signalmen who will instruct regarding work methods procedures safe use of tools and test equipment. Completes work on repetitive tasks that are routine incidental or preparatory work.

Assists in making required tests to ensure problems/trouble areas are corrected.

Operates construction equipment including trucks backhoes trencher/diggers boom trucks and other small machinery as directed.

Bonds rail digs ditches by hand pulls wire and lifts signal components as directed.

Prepares and completes work records time cards and other records as directed.


Factor 1 - Knowledge

Incumbent will be required to work with common hand tools and heavy power tools. Must be able to progressively learn the fundamental use of electronic test equipment that includes voltmeters ohm meters and amp meters. Must be able to progressively learn simple schematic diagrams block diagrams and troubleshooting principles. Must have a basic understanding of mathematics and algebra. Must have a valid drivers license. Must be able to obtain an ARRC Track Car license and a Class A Commercial Drivers license.

Factor 2 - Responsibilities

Works under close supervision of a Signalman who makes verbal work assignments providing specific and detailed instructions on all but routine and repetitive tasks. Work is reviewed in progress to ensure compliance with instructions and for overall adequacy. Performs simpler tasks alone or with minimal direction.

Factor 3 - Physical Effort

Some installations maintenance and repairs require work in hard-to-reach places. This requires standing on ladders stooping bending kneeling climbing over 20 ft. high on signals using safety harness equipment and working in uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. Frequently lifts carries and positions heavy tools parts and equipment weighing up to 90 pounds.

Factor 4 - Work Conditions

Employee is required to perform work inside and out of doors. Is sometimes also required to make necessary installations and repairs outside in adverse weather conditions such as rain snow and extreme cold conditions. Required to climb signal mast in excess of 20 feet. Is occasionally required to climb in and out of confined spaces.


Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED is required. Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to work with common hand tools and heavy power tools is required. Must be able to progressively learn the fundamental use of electronic test equipment that includes voltmeters ohm meters and amp meters. Must be able to progressively learn simple schematic diagrams block diagrams and understand troubleshooting principles. Must have a basic understanding of mathematics and algebra. Must be able to operate motor vehicles and have a valid drivers license. Must obtain an ARRC Track Car License within twelve (12) months of date of hire.
