Job Summary

The Department of Religion at Dartmouth College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of the Hebrew Bible in its Ancient Context. Appointment to begin as early as July 1 2026. We invite applications from qualified candidates whose academic specialization lies in religion or in an academic discipline relating to the study of religion. Candidates should demonstrate a thorough grounding in the ancient and modern languages necessary to engage in Biblical scholarship and to be familiar with theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of religion. We are especially interested in applicants with expertise in Biblical archeology or other material culture approaches and who demonstrate the ability to teach the Hebrew Biblical tradition broadly defined including early rabbinic material.

Since its inception in 1949 the Religion Department has been committed to a multidisciplinary globally diverse curriculum grounded in the academic study of religions as engaged through a variety of methodological approaches. The Department offers instruction from the introductory to the advanced level in most of the worlds major religious traditions. The Department offers an undergraduate major and minor.

Outside of the Department of Religion the person in this position will also be able to benefit from the opportunities provided by the interdisciplinary programs (such as the Jewish Studies and Middle Eastern Studies programs) as well as the Leslie Humanities Center.

Ph.D. in Religion or a closely related field or ABD with degree completed by the time of appointment along with a record of outstanding scholarship and effective teaching. Requirements include teaching four courses per year (0-2 per quarter over 3 quarters) and normal department service.
