Why Your Role Matters:
Working alongside another Team Lead you will lead the delivery of an accurate and compliant payroll embed payroll standards and internal controls and oversee the resolution of complex and escalated payroll matters.

Through strong people leadership and stakeholder collaboration you will lead a team of 4 payroll professionals and provide operational oversight and strategic advice to the Payroll Manager ensuring payroll activities are executed efficiently risks are proactively managed and sustainable pay confidence is maintained across the organisation.

Key focuses of your role include:

  • Lead and oversee payroll processing including review of payroll processing inputs and outputs pre and post pay reconciliations and resolution of complex calculations or adjustments ensuring accurate and timely payments.
  • Oversee the delivery of a compliant and timely fortnightly and ad hoc payroll for all UNSW staff cohorts (including casuals) ensuring data integrity operational efficiency and consistent application of professional and academic Enterprise Agreements.
  • Develop embed and monitor internal control frameworks including payroll policies team workloads and performance metrics to ensure risks are proactively managed and payroll activities are performed efficiently.
  • Build and maintain strong strategic partnerships with stakeholders to support effective payroll delivery and resolution of complex matters.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives by leading system upgrades process enhancements and efficiency initiatives incorporating stakeholder feedback to strengthen controls and optimise service delivery.


This role reports to the Payroll Manager sitting in the People Services Team managing four direct reports to support payroll processing operations.

Who you are:
You are an experienced payroll leader with a strong track record overseeing payroll operations within a large complex organisation. You bring extensive knowledge of Australian payroll legislation Enterprise Agreements and internal controls and are confident leading teams to deliver accurate compliant and timely payroll outcomes. With a collaborative and service-focused approach you build effective stakeholder partnerships manage and resolve escalated and high-risk payroll matters and drive continuous improvement across payroll systems processes and governance to support sustainable pay confidence.

You will hold the following skills and experience:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification CPS or Certificate IV in Payroll Administration with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education training and experience.
  • Extensive and up-to-date knowledge of Australian payroll legislation
  • Demonstrated prior experience in payroll processing in a complex and high-volume environment
  • Prior experience in Enterprise Agreement interpretation and application in payroll processing
  • Ability to develop and implement team performance measures
  • Effective communication with internal and external stakeholders including the ability to explain payroll concepts in a clear simple and pleasant manner.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing superior customer service to support stakeholders at different levels and leading the team in providing this service
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective stakeholder relationships incorporating feedback to improve services
  • Proven success in managing escalated issues and resolving complex matters
  • Proficient in Oracle payroll and HRIS products
  • Strong knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office products
  • High attention to detail and level of accuracy while working in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information
