The NC Department of Administration is the business manager for North Carolina state government. The department oversees Government Operations such as building construction purchasing and contracting for goods and services maintaining facilities managing state vehicles acquiring and disposing of real property and operating auxiliary services such as courier mail delivery and the sale of state and federal surplus property. Additionally the department manages many of the states advocacy programs that provide assistance and services to diverse segments of the states population that have been traditionally underserved.

Job Duties: Policy interns will work with and support DOAs Policy Office within the Office of the Secretary. Interns will work on a variety of projects and learn about the work policy priorities and management of DOA. Interns will have the opportunity to build and strengthen their professional skills particularly in policy research analysis writing organization and interpersonal communication.
Major Task to be Performed: An intern will have the unique opportunity to observe and interact with programs and Commissions across the department. Interns may develop materials to enhance the publics awareness of the Department of Administration. Policy interns will become an integral part of the department participating in activities attending meetings with state government officials; attending boards and commission meetings featuring external stakeholders; collaborating on policy drafts; and conducting project-specific research and outreach on a variety of issues such as environmental justice vehicle electrification non-public education womens and youth issues Historically Underutilized Businesses record retention and more.
Final Product or Outcome Anticipated:
Multiple products including but not limited to memos and research documents speeches and PowerPoint presentations database management departmental policies and correspondence documents.
Academic Majors Desired: Public Policy Political Science Government Public Administration law/pre-law will consider others.
2026 State of North Carolina Internship Period: Monday May 18 Friday July 24 2025
Professionalism; strong analytical writing and communication skills; ability to multitask while maintaining strong attention to detail; interest in public policy issues and public service. A successful applicant will exhibit personal time management as much of internship will require independent work.
