Practicum Student - Wildfire Smoke Health Surveillance

This posting is to fill a current vacancy.

The Role:

The successful candidate will provide support in a project in the area of real-time surveillance of wildfire-related human risk. The scope of this practicum is to contribute to statistical analysis of short-term exposure to wildfire-related air pollution and health effects in Ontario using provincial syndromic surveillance system.

Suggested placement start date: May to August 2026

Please note:
This position is only open to students who are currently enrolled in an academic program where the completion of a practicum placement is required.
This position is only open to students currently residing in Ontario and attending a Canadian academic institution. Preference will be given to students enrolled in Ontario-based academic institutions.
This is a paid placement.

Educational objectives:

  • Conduct statistical analysis with large-scale provincial administrative health databases.

  • Develop skills in data linkage.

  • Gain knowledge in environmental data.

Proposed deliverables at the end of the placement:

  • Develop a tool to extract real-time environmental data and link them to the syndromic surveillance database.

  • Develop a statistical model to detect wildfire-related health risks.

Required education and experience:
The ideal candidate will have:

  • Completed year one of a two year biostatistics mathematics epidemiology environmental health or related Masters program with training in statistical methods.

  • Strong skills in statistical data analysis using R.

Duration: Student (Fixed Term) 3 month(s)

Hours of Work: Full time 36.25 hours per week

Compensation Group: Individual Contributor

Compensation Range: $700.00 - $725.00
