About Us

The NC Department of Administration is the business manager for North Carolina state government. The department oversees Government Operations such as building construction purchasing and contracting for goods and services maintaining facilities managing state vehicles acquiring and disposing of real property and operating auxiliary services such as courier mail delivery and the sale of state and federal surplus property. Additionally the department manages many of the states advocacy programs that provide assistance and services to diverse segments of the states population that have been traditionally underserved.

Job Duties: The intern will support the Division for Women & Youth within the North Carolina Department of Administration. The Division advances safety equity and opportunity for women and youth through domestic violence and sexual assault programs youth leadership initiatives and two statewide advisory bodies. The intern will assist with project-based research and light administrative tasks that contribute to the Divisions broader mission. This role provides exposure to state government gender equity work and human services policy. Internship duties will include:

  • Conduct comparative research on how other states certify train or regulate domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy roles.
  • Prepare research summaries matrices and short report that documents national trends and promising practices.
  • Assist with basic records retention compliance.
  • Participate in internal meetings or training sessions as appropriate to learn about state-level program administration and interagency collaboration.
  • Assist with special projects as assigned in support of the Administrative Coordinator or Division leadership.

Major Task to be Performed:

  • Develop a multi-state overview of domestic and sexual assault advocate certification or training requirements.
  • Create a comparison chart or written summary of key findings.
  • Attend internal meetings or training sessions for exposure to state government operations.

Final Product or Outcome Anticipated:

  • Research brief comparing advocate certification and training requirements across states.
  • Increased knowledge of division purpose and public service

Academic Majors Desired: Public Policy Social Work Sociology Womens & Gender Studies Political Science Public Administration Criminology Law/Pre-Law or related fields.

2026 State of North Carolina Internship Period: Monday May 18 Friday July 24 2025

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
  • Interest in gender equity public policy or domestic and sexual violence response.
  • Strong research writing and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
  • Attention to detail when reviewing documents or compiling information.
  • Professional communication skills and willingness to learn.
  • Basic familiarity with Microsoft Office is helpful.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
  • An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college university law school community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state.
  • Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
  • Applicant must be a high school graduate and at least 18 years old by January 1 2026.
  • Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program.
  • To qualify for a law internship applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship unless other majors are listed.
  • Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship. Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment.
