About the role

The Grid Performance and Integration team sits within AEMOs Operational Resilience Group and is responsible for the investigation study and management of existing and emerging technical risks in a rapidly changing power system. We do this through the detailed investigation of power system incidents and the assessment and modelling of critical power system risks; these tasks lead to the implementation of key changes to enhance overall power system resilience.

You will leverage your expertise in communication power system engineering operations or design to understand current and future power system risks and develop means to reduce and mitigate this risk. This will involve supporting the delivery of key risk and performance documents as required under the National Electricity Rules and WEM Rules including AEMOs General Power System Risk Review major power system incident reviews and others. For these tasks you will frame complex engineering problem statements delivery of power system studies solve challenging power system modelling issues and engage with internal and external stakeholders. You may also support the commissioning of major interconnectors linking NEM regions. Your reports will be published on AEMOs website and you will have the opportunity to present key findings to senior leaders at AEMO and across the energy sector.

What you will be doing

  • Provide detailed technical insight on power system operational matters supporting the development of less experienced engineers with a focus on power system modelling and the development of technical skills.
  • Support decision makers with high quality analysis and advice displays an understanding of AEMOs regulatory commercial stakeholder and strategic business context.
  • Independently complete challenging technical analysis and power system studies in PSS/E and PSCAD to support AEMOs understanding of existing and emerging power system risks and performance issues.
  • Make a key contribution to the timely and effective delivery of high-profile power system risk and performance documents as required under the National Electricity Rules and WEM Rules including AEMOs General Power System Risk Review major incident reviews and others. Presents technical material to internal and external stakeholders as part of this process and make recommendations to manage risk.
  • Assess risks and operational mitigation related to current and future network enhancements and remedial actions schemes/special protection schemes.

What you will bring to the role

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or other discipline relevant to power systems analysis.
  • Highly proficient in using PSS/E PSCAD or DigSILENT for load flow and stability analysis (rotor angle stability and voltage stability) and fault analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience in power systems analysis and engineering with proficiency in electrical engineering principles specifically related to electricity generation transmission and distribution system theory analysis and modelling.
  • Sound knowledge of power system protection and control systems theory and application.
  • Understanding of power system planning assets and equipment design.
