Summary
Involves developing implementing and monitoring environmental and safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal state and local environmental health and safety regulations and to ensure a safe and sustainable workplace.
Develops and implements health and safety policies and procedures. Conducts risk assessments and coordinates with state agency & insurer inspections. Manages the Occupational Health and Safety Program. Investigates accidents and incidents. Provides training and guidance on health and safety issues. Monitors compliance with health and safety legislation. Promotes health and safety in the workplace which is about preventing injury from all incidental dangers that may arise within the workplace.
Responsibilities
- Establish and execute long-term health and safety strategies that align with corporate objectives and regulatory requirements.
- Serve as the key advisor to executive leadership on health and safety policies risk mitigation and compliance.
- Lead and mentor a team of health and safety professionals across multiple sites ensuring alignment with corporate goals.
- Develop and manage the health and safety budget ensuring cost-effective and high-impact initiatives.
- Oversee regulatory compliance with OSHA EPA and other relevant agencies ensuring full adherence to legal and safety requirements.
- Direct enterprise-wide safety audits inspections and incident investigations implementing continuous improvement measures.
- Lead the organizations response to safety incidents ensuring root cause analysis corrective actions and prevention strategies are in place.
- Foster a culture of safety excellence by championing proactive risk management and employee engagement.
- Oversee the development and deployment of training programs to enhance employee awareness and competency in safety protocols.
- Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and reporting mechanisms to measure health and safety performance and effectiveness.
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders including regulators industry groups and community organizations to advocate for best-in-class health and safety practices.
- Develop and implement emergency response plans and crisis management strategies ensuring business continuity.
- Provide guidance to senior management on emerging health and safety risks and legislative changes.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Deep expertise in federal state and local health and safety regulations including OSHA EPA and industry-specific standards.
- Strong leadership and people management experience with the ability to influence executive decision-making.
- Proven experience in implementing enterprise-wide safety programs risk assessments and compliance strategies.
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to engage with employees at all levels of the organization.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to drive data-driven safety improvements.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects budgets and cross-functional teams.
- Proficiency in safety management systems auditing processes and risk assessment methodologies.
Education Experience and Certifications
- Bachelors Degree required. Degree in Engineering Environmental Science or Safety discipline preferred.
- Masters Degree in Engineering Environmental Science or Safety discipline preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in Environmental Health & Safety Management.
- Minimum 10 years in an EHS leadership role managing employees
- Utility experience required
- Applicable Certifications PE CIH CSP CHMM CUSP etc. are preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Physical ability to tour Authority power plants
- Must possess a drivers license and be able to travel throughout New York State on an occasional basis.
