Medical Laboratory Technician

Job Summary

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include but are not limited to the following:

• Work under the supervision of a medical technologist or physician to perform tests that help physicians diagnose and treat diseases

• The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for accurately performing specimen analysis instrument maintenance and quality control procedures including moderate and high complexity laboratory tests

• Follows laboratorys procedures for specimen handling and processing test analysis reporting and maintain records of patient results

• Follows necessary QA/QC requirements for a COLA laboratory

• Performs routine Chemistry Hematology and Urinalysis testing

• Prepares peripheral blood smear and performs complete WBC differential on normal and abnormal smears

• Processes samples for send out and reflex laboratory testing

• Participates in proficiency testing by performing sample analysis and reporting results at least once a year

• Assists with special procedures as needed (i.e. bone marrow aspiration/biopsy procedures)

• Ensures operation of analyzers and other laboratory equipment by calibrating; completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturers instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques

• Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies

• Conserves laboratory resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results

• Maintains professional and technical knowledge by maintaining certification requirements

• Maintains inter- and intradepartmental workflow by fostering a spirit of cooperation

• Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures rules and regulations

• Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control and hazardous waste policies and protocols

• Maintains patient confidence and protects the company by keeping information confidential per HIPAA regulations

• Other duties as assigned

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Must be comfortable with manual differential testing and performing venipunctures

• Must be comfortable with Clinical Lab Testing Chemistry Techniques and Analyzing Information

• Experience with reading Microscopic UA

• Experience with Manual Differentials

• Must be comfortable with Equipment Maintenance

• Comfortable using Microsoft Word and Excel and databases

• Must be a team player with great communication

Required Education and Experience

• Associates degree in MLT

• ASCP certification as an MLT

• Minimum of 1 years of experience as a Med Laboratory Technician/Laboratory Scientist Documentation Skills

• Hematology/Core Lab/Phlebotomy experience is preferred
