Job Summary

DESCRIPTION

The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill one (1) regular full-time position in the class of Occupational Therapistwithin the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA). The position will be assigned tothe California Childrens Services (CCS) Program.Spanish bilingual preferred.

The Medical Therapy Program (MTP) is a specialized program within California Childrens Services (CCS) that provides medically necessary physical therapy (PT) occupational therapy (OT) and Medical Therapy Conference (MTC) services to children and young adults with disabling conditions primarily resulting from neurological or musculoskeletal disorders.

The Medical Therapy Conference (MTC) is an interdisciplinary family-centered process that includes the client and caregiver/family physical therapist occupational therapist and an MTC physician. The team works collaboratively to assess the childs medical and functional needs develop treatment recommendations and coordinate services.

The CCS Medical Therapy Program serves eligible children and young adults from birth through 21 years of age who have CCS MTPeligible conditions. Examples of eligible conditions include but are not limited to cerebral palsy neuromuscular diseases (such as muscular dystrophy) musculoskeletal conditions (such as arthrogryposis) juvenile rheumatoid arthritis spina bifida brachial plexus injuries and acquired injuries and illnesses including burns and traumatic brain injuries.

The CCS MTP is administered through a partnership between county health departments and the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) in collaboration with local education partners. Most services are provided in Medical Therapy Units (MTUs) which are typically located on public school sites in accordance with California Code of Regulations (CCR) Title 2.

The Occupational Therapist delivers a full range of occupational therapy services to physically handicapped children including evaluation planning and providing OT treatment to children with physical disabilities. The Occupational Therapist (OT) works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team including physicians nurses physical social workers school personnel and outside agencies to meet the therapy needs of the children served by the CCS Medical Therapy Program (MTP). The mission of the CCS MTP is to maximize the quality of life for special needs children through the provision of Physical and Occupational Therapy services including ongoing assessment treatment and consultation to the child family and community.

The ideal candidate will bring at least five years of pediatric experience and possess excellent interpersonal skills including strong written and verbal communication. We are seeking a team-oriented individual who is also comfortable working independently. Expertise in DME evaluation modification and repairs as well as splinting assessment and fabrication is essential. Advanced practice skills in areas such as feeding and swallowing modalities and hand therapy are highly desirable.The Occupational Therapist may telecommute on Fridays provided there is no Medical Therapy Conference scheduled that day.

Definition
Under direction plans and performs occupational or physical therapy for physically handicapped persons primarily children; and performs other related work as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are typical of those performed by incumbents in this classification; however other duties may also be required.

  • Provides occupational or physical therapy services for the physically handicapped.
  • Confers with physicians to determine type and extent of treatment required by each case and institutes therapy as prescribed.
  • Administers diagnostic and prognostic tests or adapts games arts and crafts as therapeutic treatment.
  • Teaches self-care and functional activities and instructs in proper body mechanics.
  • Assists parents in understanding and handling physically handicapped children.
  • Prepares materials and constructs and maintains equipment used in treatment of cases.
  • Coordinates treatment plan with occupational or physical therapists to facilitate a comprehensive team approach to therapeutic services.
  • Adapts various functions to therapeutic requirements of patients and conducts therapeutic exercises.
  • Uses tact and understanding in dealing with patients and gives instructions to parents on the care of braces and the construction of equipment at home.
  • Cooperates with other professional staff to secure carry-over in the treatment and training of patients.
  • Maintains records of work performed and progress of patients and prepares required reports.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

License: Possession of a valid Certificate of Registration as a Physical Therapist issued by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California or current registration with the National Registry of Occupational Therapists.

License

Knowledge of: accepted methods of physical therapy and treatments directed toward increasing the range of joint motions increasing muscle strength and assisting coordination of movements; adaptation of games crafts and other activities as therapeutic exercises; development design and construction of special equipment and the use and care of orthopedic appliances and equipment; skeletal anatomy kinesiology and the objectives of occupational therapy treatment; physical and psychological problems of therapy patients and their effects on the family.

Ability to: instruct in therapeutic exercises explain and interpret objectives and methods to patients and parents; adapt various functions to therapeutic requirements of patients; use tact and understanding in dealing with patients; cooperate with professional staff to secure carry-over in the treatment of patients; prepare accurate concise case reports; understand and carry out oral and written directions.
