Job Summary

Responsibilities

The Fire Marshal serves as the Citys lead fire safety administrator directing the Fire Departments Community Services Bureau and overseeing fire prevention inspections investigations code enforcement and public education programs. This position develops and administers a comprehensive city-wide fire safety and accident prevention program to reduce risk and minimize loss of life and property. The Fire Marshal supervises Fire Prevention Specialist personnel manages staffing priorities and ensures compliance with local state and federal fire codes and regulations. Responsibilities include reviewing building and construction plans overseeing fire investigations and arson abatement efforts and participating in fire code development and interpretation. The position also prepares and manages the bureaus budget and maintains required records and technical documentation. The Fire Marshal serves as an advisor to City officials businesses contractors and community groups on fire safety matters.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Fire Protection Engineering Fire Science Technology Safety/Risk Management Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice Chemistry Environmental Science or Engineering with a concentration in architectural civil electrical/electronic industrial mechanical or systems engineering AND4 years of experience in fire prevention firefighting law enforcement or closely related field 2 years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; OR

Associates degree in Fire Protection Engineering Fire Science Technology Safety/Risk Management Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice Chemistry Environmental Science or Engineering with a concentration in architectural civil electrical/electronic industrial mechanical or systems engineering AND6 years of experience in fire prevention firefighting law enforcement or closely related field 2 years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity. Experience in fire investigation is preferred.

Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.

License Requirements

Must possess a valid drivers license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Special Requirements

Must obtain and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment certification as a State of Ohio Fire Safety Inspector within 6 months from the date of appointment. Must obtain and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment certification as a State of Ohio Fire Inspector as issued by the Ohio Board of Building Standards within 6 months of becoming eligible for the examination.

Background Check

A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position including current city employees seeking transfer promotion demotion etc. into a classified position.

Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
