Job Summary

The Team Editor Culture & Lifestyle will be a key driver in shaping the Toronto Stars arts entertainment and lifestyle coverage. This role is for a creative high-energy editor who can spot a trend before it peaks and knows how to turn a local cultural moment into a must-read digital story. You will work with a team of reporters and writers to produce sophisticated service-oriented and narrative journalism that captures the pulse of Toronto. Whether its is a deep dive into the citys changing theatre landscape or a piece on a viral social trend you will ensure our coverage is indispensable to our readers daily lives. This role falls within the Team Editor classification in the Stars Editorial Department and will report to the Director of Culture and Lifestyle.

What You Will Do

  • Generate and pitch high-impact story ideas across arts entertainment and lifestyle. Assign stories to staff writers and freelancers ensuring a diverse range of voices and perspectives.
  • Edit stories for tone structure and clarity moving between trending digital-first stories and longer-form narrative features.
  • Closely follow the Toronto arts culture and lifestyle space as well as global entertainment trends to ensure the Star is first to market with relevant commentary and news.
  • Oversee the visual and technical packaging of stories ensuring they are optimized for mobile and desktop readers with high-quality photos videos and interactive elements.
  • Work cross-functionally with the audience visuals and multimedia teams to develop multi-platform rollout strategies for major cultural projects.
  • Maintain the Toronto Stars rigorous journalistic standards and the Atkinson Principles in all arts and lifestyle coverage.

Salary: $$73515.72 -$101881.38

This is a notice of vacancy under Article 8 of collective agreement between Toronto Star Newspapers Limited and Unifor Local 87M. The hours of work for this position will vary according to the assignment but will all conform to a standard 35-hour work week as described under the collective agreement. This position will be in Toronto. 


Qualifications :

  • Excellent news judgment including the ability to distinguish between a fleeting social media fad and a meaningful cultural shift.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills including a proven track record of top-tier journalism.
  • A sophisticated understanding of Torontos unique cultural fabric from its festival circuits to its restaurant scenes and diverse neighborhoods.
  • A collaborative spirit with experience working across newsroom departments to achieve shared goals. 
  • Experience working across different beats to find the lifestyle angle in hard news stories
  • A deep passion for quality journalism and the ability to work quickly and accurately in a fast-paced deadline-driven newsroom environment.
