Description

This position is responsible for performing skilled plumbing electrical and heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) maintenance of City facilities. An incumbent in this position may progress with time in grade and a demonstrated increase in skill levels to a Facilities Technician II (MEP).

Major Duties


  • Maintains and repairs potable non-potable water systems waste systems and appurtenant equipment in City facilities.


  • Provides cost estimates on jobs when needed to include purchasing materials according to City policy and procedures as needed to complete work projects.


  • Installs new water and waste systems and appurtenances in remodeled expanded or new facilities.


  • Installs maintains alters and repairs electrical components such as wires lighting power appliances machinery overhead circuits underground conduits and pole lines to include working on specialized equipment.


  • Installs maintains and repairs electric motors generators controllers and related moderately complex electrical and mechanical equipment.


  • Performs and/or assists in the installation repair and maintenance of major small and/or medium HVAC systems Direct Digital Controls and equipment.


  • Assists in new construction. Duties may include the installation of extensive electrical plumbing and/or HVAC work.


  • Processes and completes work orders in the computer system accounting for labor and materials.


  • Will be required to be on-call (evenings weekends holidays etc.) according to division protocol and procedures; or respond to emergency situations as necessary.


  • Operates city vehicles to work sites etc.


  • Performs related duties as required.


KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION


  • Knowledge of construction installation maintenance and repair of plumbing systems.


  • Knowledge of construction installation maintenance and repair of commercial/industrial electrical systems.


  • Knowledge of state and local electrical plumbing and building codes to include ADA requirements.


  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures.


  • Knowledge of HVAC systems Direct Digital control and equipment.


  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software.


  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings schematics wiring diagrams and blueprints.


  • Skill in the use of tools both hand and power.


  • Ability to solve problems and exercise critical thinking.


  • Skill in interpersonal relations.


SUPERVISORY CONTROLS


The Facilities Supervisor (MEP) assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with City procedures and the precision of the results with the initial request.


GUIDELINES


Guidelines include electrical plumbing and building codes; ADA requirements; contract specifications and both City and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and explicit but may require interpretation in application.


COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK


  • The work consists of related technical duties. The variety of tasks to be performed contributes to the difficulty of the work.


  • The purpose of this position is to support in the construction maintenance and repair of City facilities. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficient and effective sustainment of those facilities.

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers vendors contractors and the public.


  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information resolve problems and provide service.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT


  • The work is typically performed while standing walking bending crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts both light and heavy objects climbs ladders uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity distinguishes between shades of color and utilizes a sense of smell.


  • The work is typically performed in various City facilities to include an office stockroom warehouse outdoors or new construction facilities and can be performed in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise dust dirt grease and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks goggles gloves etc.


SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY


None.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Graduation from a standard senior-high school or GED equivalent as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); and


  • Possession of one of the following:
    1. Certification* in Electrical Technology HVAC Plumbing
    2. Associates* degree in Electrical Technology HVAC Plumbing or a very closely related field
    3. Journeymans license (issued by the Alabama Board of Electrical Contractors)
    4. Provisional License of Electrical Contracting (issued by the Alabama Board of Electrical Contractors)
    5. Electrical Contractors License (issued by the Alabama Board of Electrical Contractors); and


  • Three (3) years recent electrical plumbing and/or heating ventilation and air conditioning work one (1) of which must be in a commercial/industrial setting; and


  • Two (2) years recent experience with basic computer skills (entering work orders requisitions inventory etc.).


*Accredited through an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education (CHEA).


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Possession of a valid driver license and acceptable driving record. (PBA 9/10/01)


  • An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including criminal credit past employment and reference checks.


  • Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy which includes pre-employment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 8/13/12)


  • Must meet the City of Dothans employment physical standard which includes drug/alcohol testing.
