Position Summary The Tow Truck Mechanic is responsible for inspecting diagnosing repairing and maintaining tow trucks and related recovery equipment. This role ensures all vehicles operate safely reliably and in compliance with state and federal regulations. The mechanic may also provide roadside troubleshooting and support when needed. Key Responsibilities Vehicle Maintenance & Repair - Perform routine inspections preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs on tow trucks and service vehicles.
- Diagnose and repair diesel and gasoline engines electrical systems hydraulics brakes steering and suspension components.
- Maintain and repair towing equipment such as winches booms wheel lifts flatbeds and hydraulic systems.
- Conduct emergency roadside troubleshooting and minor repairs on stalled or disabled vehicles when required.
Roadside & Recovery Support - Assist tow operators with recovery procedures and ensure equipment is functioning properly during operations.
- Provide roadside services such as tire changes jump starts lockouts and battery installations when needed.
Equipment & Shop Maintenance - Perform daily inspections and ensure tow trucks are clean organized and fully stocked with tools and supplies.
- Maintain accurate service records repair logs and inspection reports.
- Identify parts needs and coordinate with management for ordering and inventory.
Safety & Compliance - Follow all OSHA DOT and company safety protocols.
- Ensure vehicles meet regulatory standards and pass required inspections.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
Qualifications - High school diploma or equivalent.
- 3 years of experience in diesel or heavy truck repair (preferred).
- Experience with tow truck equipment hydraulics and recovery systems.
- Valid drivers license; CDL preferred.
- Strong diagnostic troubleshooting and mechanical skills.
- Ability to work independently and in fast-paced environments.
- Physical ability to lift heavy components and work in various weather conditions.
Preferred Skills - Diesel technician certification.
- Welding or fabrication experience.
- Knowledge of electrical diagnostics and hydraulic systems.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
Work Environment - Shop-based with occasional roadside or field repair assignments.
- May require evening weekend or on-call shifts depending on company needs.
