Job Title: School Psychologist Intern

Supervisor:Special Education Directors

FLSA Status: Exempt

Contract: 192 Days

Summary: In partnership with the Medford School District and under the supervision of a site or field supervisor the intern will carry out job responsibilities and fulfill internship requirements as specified by the post-secondary institution.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist and/or provide counseling instruction and mentoring for those struggling with social emotional and behavioral problems under the supervision of administration or their designee.
  • Gives input and participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the assessment identification evaluation and placement of students into special education programs.
  • Participates as crisis team member and provides crisis intervention for students and staff in the advent of sudden illness or injury under the direction of administration.
  • Works collaboratively to support students social emotional and behavioral health.
  • Assists with the identification of learning and behavior problems that interfere with school success
  • Assist with implementing school-wide prevention programs that help maintain positive school climates conducive to learning
  • Assist with increasing achievement by assessing barriers to learning and determining the best instructional strategies to improve learning.

Professional Preparedness and Growth

  • To the extent possible the Medford School District will provide an internship experience that is aligned with the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). The internship experience will provide the intern with the opportunity to work in a variety of school settings with children and adolescents of differing backgrounds and needs.

Principles of Teaching and Learning

  • Identify and resolve academic barriers to learning
  • Design and implement student progress monitoring systems
  • Design and implement academic and behavior interventions
  • Support effective individualized instruction
  • Create positive classroom environments
  • Motivate all students to engage in learning

Multi-Ethnic/Multi-Cultural Education

  • Aware and appreciates cultural diversity and the importance of communication skills reflecting sensitivity to the feeling of all persons regardless of their race color religion sex age or national origin.

Evaluation-Supports Education Staff in the Following Areas:

  • Actively participates in faculty and grade level or department meetings assist building efforts to plan budget implement and evaluate the schools program and to do related work as required

Communication Skills

  • Working with other team members helps facilitate contact with and acts as a liaison between the home school community health agencies and the private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of the school community.
  • Maintains communication with administrators teachers other school personnel and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the health and safety needs of students.
  • Suggest referrals and help coordinate community support

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Assist with collection and analyzing data related to school improvement student outcomes and accountability requirements.
  • Assist with the design implementation and garner support for comprehensive school mental health programming

Marginal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with promoting wellness and resilience by reinforcing communication and social skills problem solving anger management self-regulation self-determination and optimism.
  • Assist with responding to crises by providing services as directed and assist with the coordination with needed community services
  • Assist with teaching parenting skills and enhance homeschool collaboration

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • All employees of the Medford School District have responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.

Education and/or Experience: A Bachelors Degree in Psychology.

Interpersonal Skills:Ability to interact appropriately with teachers staff members of the community and students. Focuses on solving conflict; maintains confidentiality; contributes to building a positive team spirit.

Mathematical Skills:Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts interest proportions percentages area circumference and area. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra geometry fractions percentages ratios and proportions to practical situations.

Computer Skills:General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use database software e-mail internet software spreadsheets teaching software and word processing software.

Certificates Licenses Registrations: The intern must complete applicable internship requirements as specified by post-secondary institutions Masters level program such as clock hour requirements written internship plans case studies and internship evaluations.

Reasoning Ability:Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written oral schedule or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Language Skills:Ability to communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing. Preference may be given to applicants who are fluent in both English and Spanish. Ability to effectively present information and respond effectively to questions in one-on-one small and large group situations to students and other school staff. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions procedure manuals and governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Stamina for 8 hours of student instruction and supervision.
  • Use of hands for repetitive motions such as writing and typing.
  • Standing/Walking: 3-6 hours/day.
  • Sitting: 2-4 hours/day.
  • Occasional bending kneeling squatting climbing of stairs or ladders.
  • Lifting/carrying: Up to 40 lbs.
  • Occasional physical interaction with students as provided by law and to ensure the physical safety of the student and/or others.
  • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less).
  • Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more).
  • Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point).
  • Speaking clearly enough to be able to be understood by others.
  • Identifying and understanding the speech of another person.
  • Emotional stability to work effectively under pressure and to keep all aspects of the job under control.
