This position supports the United States Department of Veterans Affairs Integrated Critical Staffing Program by providing on-site diagnostic ultrasound services to eligible Veterans Affairs beneficiaries at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Certified Sonographer / Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for performing highly complex diagnostic ultrasound examinations under the general supervision of a Radiologist. The role requires the use of approved ultrasound imaging equipment and established Veterans Health Administration protocols to generate diagnostically valid images. The technologist plays a critical role in patient care by preparing patients for procedures ensuring patient safety and comfort acquiring and evaluating images for diagnostic quality and documenting examinations in the Veterans Affairs electronic health record systems in compliance with Veterans Affairs policies the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Joint Commission standards and applicable federal regulations.

 

  • Perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations in accordance with the Veterans Affairs Performance Work Statement and Radiology Service protocols.
  • Operate adjust and optimize ultrasound equipment to obtain high-quality diagnostic images including proper image annotation labeling evaluation and completeness for timely physician interpretation.
  • Prepare patients for ultrasound examinations by verifying patient identity explaining procedures confirming preparation requirements and ensuring patient comfort safety and modesty throughout the examination.
  • Review examination requests and relevant medical records to verify accuracy completeness and appropriateness of the ordered ultrasound procedure.
  • Provide technical observations and communicate significant findings to the supervising Radiologist during or immediately following examinations as required.
  • Maintain accurate complete and timely documentation of ultrasound procedures images and technical data within the Veterans Affairs electronic health record and imaging systems including Picture Archiving and Communication Systems.
  • Adhere to all infection control patient safety and standard precaution requirements including proper room setup equipment cleanliness and supply restocking.
  • Perform routine operational checks of ultrasound equipment prior to patient examinations and promptly report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns to supervisory personnel.
  • Provide portable ultrasound services within the medical center when required by clinical operations.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality and comply with all Veterans Affairs privacy information security and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act requirements.
  • Complete all required Veterans Affairs mandatory education training quality assurance activities and performance monitoring requirements.
  • Comply with Veterans Affairs time attendance and workload reporting procedures and remain on duty until properly relieved.
  • Completes required organizational compliance education including assigned requirements that are client-specified for Joint Commission Healthcare Staffing Services certification or other regulatory bodies.

Qualifications :

Basic Requirements/Certifications:

  • Current certification from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
  • Minimum of one year of clinical experience performing diagnostic ultrasound examinations including complex examinations under Radiologist supervision.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in diagnostic ultrasound imaging techniques.
  • Experience with General Electric ultrasound equipment.
  • Knowledge of Philips IntelliSpace Picture Archiving and Communication System is highly desirable.

Education Required:

  • Associate degree or bachelors degree from an accredited diagnostic medical sonography or ultrasound technology program.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • May require bending stooping and lifting up to 15 lbs.

Other Special Qualifications:

  • Must be able to read write and speak English to effectively communicate.
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card is

Pay range is based on several factors and may vary in addition to a full range of medical financial and/or other benefits. Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicants background experience skills internal equity and alignment with geographical market data.
