The Hawaii Education Research Network at the University of Hawaii Manoa in partnership with the Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) is excited to announce an upcoming Graduate Assistant (GA) position for Spring 2026. The GA will work as part of a research practice partnership team with College of Education faculty member Dr. Kealii Kukahiko and HIDOE partners to conduct a participatory action research assessment of Attendance data in HIDOE. Work will include data collection and analysis report writing and dissemination. The GA would likely have opportunities to co-author/co-present evaluation findings and scholarly works in partnership with the faculty lead.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of the COE faculty member collaborate on a research practice partnership between the Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE) and UHMs College of Education.

  • Conduct literature searches and reviews to inform the study;

  • Collect and analyze data;

  • Assist in developing and submitting the IRB application for project

  • Assist in co-authoring/co-presenting project findings and scholarly work;

  • Meet with project partners and related stakeholders

  • With guidance from faculty participate in writing research reports and and sharing findings with diverse stakeholders (e.g. webinars research forms conferences).

  • Participate in HERN GA and project team meetings

  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  1. Classified full-time (minimum of 6 credits) graduate student in good academic standing (GPA of 3.0 or above) at UH Manoa.

  2. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  3. Strong organizational skills including the ability to pay attention to tasks with detail.

  4. Strong written and oral communication skills.


Desirable Qualifications

  1. Experience conducting literature searches and reviews.

  2. Experience presenting to diverse audiences.

  3. Experience writing reports.

  4. Experience in coding or categorizing qualitative data.

  5. Experience in cleaning and manipulating qualitative and quantitative data sets.

  6. Experience in project management

  7. Experience working with diverse stakeholders.

  8. Experience working in or with the HIDOE;

  9. Experience in report writing and use of APA style;

  10. Experience making research presentations in professional settings.

  11. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
