The starting salary is based upon the previous number of years of teaching experience.Any part-time part-time position (less than 1.0 FTE) will be proratedto the appropriate FTE.

General Summary:

The High School Teacher assists students in learning the subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature able and responsible men and women. The High School Teacher reports to the building principal.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teaches district-approved curriculum.
  2. Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  3. Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs interests and abilities of the students.
  4. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
  5. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and for the classroom develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  6. Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  7. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals established clear objectives for all lessons units projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
  8. Diagnoses the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis seeking the assistance of district specialists as required.
  9. Evaluates pupils academic and social growth and keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.
  10. Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.
  11. Supervises classroom students and volunteers.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelors degree in Secondary Education required or alternative route to teaching certification program required.
  2. Must be highly qualified in the subject matter assigned.
  3. Must possess a valid Michigan teaching certificate with secondary (6-12 or 7-12)Music Education (JQ or JX) endorsement areas. Additional endorsement areas preferred.
  4. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  5. Demonstrate success in area of application.

Program and Position Description

TC West continues to set the standard for choral music programs in the state of Michigan. Supported by a strong K12 music curriculum within the TCAPS district West choirs and ensembles consistently represent TC West Senior High at MSVMA All-State events and the Michigan Music Conference. The ideal candidate will serve as the full time face of the program foster a positive culture among students and lead rehearsals and performances through highly effective instruction.

Specific Duties

Teaching and Performance

  • Teach rehearse and conduct the high school choral groups
  • Organize teach and continue to foster the solo & ensemble program
  • Organize teach and program concerts scheduled throughout the year
  • Participate in MSVMA Concert Festivals MSVMA Solo & Ensemble
  • Provide highly skilled instruction to high school vocal musicians
  • Able to plan and teach in a collaborative environment.
  • Serve as Vocal Music Director for the annual musical theater production.
  • Be able to effectively rehearse and conduct the pit orchestra as needed for annual musical theater production.

Administrative

  • Work collaboratively with TCAPS District Music Department staff.
  • Coordination with WSH music colleagues and district wide choir directors development of schedules curriculum budget handbooks communications programs etc.
  • Maintain the choir music library.
  • Work collaboratively with district wide music boosters organization as well as area parents with the WSH choir program.
  • Communicate and collaborate with middle school choir directors to align instruction.
  • Demonstrate and maintain total school and community awareness in dealing with students parents administration teaching staff and community members.

Desired musical skills

  • Versatile musician with varied musical interests
  • Experienced concert conductor of high school choral literature with advanced rehearsal skills
  • Piano proficiency
  • 3-5 years of successful high school teaching is preferred.

Supporting materials documenting application

Finalists should be prepared to include some or all of the following:

  • Recordings of concert ensemble performances
  • Festival adjudication sheets in concert demonstrating positive evaluations of past performances
  • Select and teach repertoire for high school choir as part of interview process
