Job Summary
The High School Automotive Technology Teacher is responsible for planning delivering and evaluating instruction in automotive service technology. This position prepares students for entry-level automotive technician careers and/or postsecondary education by providing hands-on and classroom instruction aligned with industry standards. The teacher emphasizes modern vehicle systems diagnostic technology safety and employability skills while fostering a positive and professional learning environment.
Program Overview
The Automotive Technology program prepares students to inspect maintain diagnose and repair automobiles and light trucks powered by gasoline electric and alternative fuel systems. Instruction reflects the evolution of the automotive industry from traditional mechanical systems to advanced electronic and computerized vehicle technologies. The program aligns with CIP Code 47.0604 Automobile/Automotive Mechanics Technology/Technician and may participate in Automotive Youth Education Service (AYES) and ASE-aligned certification pathways.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging instruction in automotive systems including engines fuel systems electrical systems brakes drivetrains suspension cooling and air conditioning systems
- Teach diagnostic and repair techniques using computerized diagnostic equipment digital manuals and manufacturer service information
- Integrate traditional hand tool use with modern electronic and computer-based automotive technologies
- Develop and implement curriculum that supports technical skills academic integration and career readiness
- Promote workplace safety proper tool usage and industry-standard shop practices
- Assess student learning through formative and summative evaluations including hands-on performance assessments
- Foster students problem-solving analytical thinking communication and technical reading skills
- Maintain a safe organized and well-managed automotive lab and classroom environment
- Support students in preparation for ASE certifications AYES participation and postsecondary pathways
- Collaborate with school staff administrators and community partners including local dealerships and industry professionals
- Stay current with automotive technology trends diagnostic tools and instructional best practices through ongoing professional development

Qualifications
- Postsecondary training or professional experience in Automotive Service Technology or a related field
- Strong knowledge of modern vehicle systems electronic diagnostics and computerized repair equipment
- ASE certification preferred or willingness to obtain
- Experience working with digital service manuals and automotive software systems
- Strong communication organizational and classroom management skills
- Ability to work effectively with high school students and support diverse learning needs
- Teaching certification or ability to obtain appropriate CTE licensure as required by the state
