Under the leadership of the Aquatic Center Manager the Head Lifeguard is responsible for the scheduling training and evaluation of all lifeguards assigned to their team. Duties include facilitating all lifeguard in-services and training ensuring proper staffing levels that all incident and accident reports are completed in a timely and accurate manner and that all Family Aquatic Center staff are prepared for the facility Emergency Action Plan.
Dates Needed: June August (pre and post season hours are required these times and dates are flexible.)
Hours: 30 hours per week while pool is open days and times are flexible; hours include some nights and weekends. This position will receive 10-20 hours as Head Lifeguard on Duty. Remaining hours will come from rotating in as a staff-level lifeguard if needed. When serving as Head Lifeguard on Duty Head Lifeguard will not participate in lifeguard rotations on deck unless necessary to ensure proper staffing levels. Head Lifeguard on Duty will also be acting Manager on Duty in absence of Aquatic Center Manager.
NOTE: The Sun Prairie Family Aquatic Center is undergoing a major renovation and is anticipated to open to the public in July of 2026. While the opening is later than a typical season we will begin paid training in Juneto ensure staff are fully prepared for opening day. This season offers a unique opportunity to be part of the opening team for a completely reimagined aquatic facility. The renovation includes updated bathhouse facilities concession stand offices lifeguard room a facility-wide speaker system and new pool features such as a climbing wall family-friendly slide aqua zipline and interactive play structures. Staff will benefit from additional training time team-building and the chance to help set the tone for a fresh start season in an amazing newly renovated facilityinside and out.

- Assist in maintaining a safe aquatic facility which includes communicating facility needs or safety concerns to Aquatic Center Manager.
- Work with team to ensure all shifts as Head Lifeguard on Duty are staffed at proper levels; coordinate lifeguard replacement and rotations.
- Serves as first level of contact responding to and documenting patron and/or staff incidents and/or accidents.
- Responsible for evaluating and coaching a team of lifeguards ensuring proper vigilance scanning and transitions are taking place.
- Work with Aquatic Center Manager to ensure all Family Aquatic Center staff are prepared to act in the event of the activation of the Emergency Action Plan.
- Responsible for proper record keeping and documentation such as staff lifeguard certification incident reports accident reports etc.
- Assist in bi-weekly payroll by verifying and approving all team lifeguard hours. Responsible for maintaining all life-saving equipment such as hip-packs first aid kits walkie-talkies & rescue tubes
- Act as Manager on Duty in the absence of the Aquatic Center Manager.
- Work with co-Head Lifeguards to facilitate all lifeguard staff trainings and in-services ensuring that lifeguards are fully competent in first aid CPR and all water rescue techniques.
Minor Duties/Responsibilities
- Attend all trainings and in-services
- Provide recommendations for future programs services events and/or process improvement.
- Promote a fun safe and positive work environment through development of effective working relationships teambuilding and a positive attitude.

Requirements of Work
Experience/Education:
- High school diploma or HSED or GED required
- Minimum of one year of lifeguarding experience required
- American Red Cross Lifeguard certification required
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification highly desired but not required.
- Ability to effectively manage and develop staff in a professional and tactful manner.
Skills knowledge or abilities needed:
- Ability and willingness to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instruction
- Ability to work unsupervised in an indoor and outdoor setting with high temperatures and humidity
- Ability to follow and enforce rules verbally communicate with the public and staff effectively and interpret and explain policies and procedures related to the Family Aquatic Center.
- Ability to mediate troubleshoot problem solve and diffuse potential difficulties.
- Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgement involving customer inquiries and/or complaints using services and/or facilities.
- Ability and willingness to keep accurate record and complete all necessary paperwork.
- Knowledge of office equipment computers and software including Microsoft Office.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
- Ability to communicate effectively in an instructional capacity.
