The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Blank Childrens Hospital delivers comprehensive round-the-clock critical care for infants children and adolescents facing traumatic injuries life-threatening illnesses or recovering from major surgery.
Unit Overview
- 12 single-patient private roomseach equipped with in-room private bathroom and shower ample storage a pull-out bed or reclining chair individual entertainment systems and privacy curtains.
- Ceiling-mounted medical equipment booms allow quick efficient access to critical tools during emergencies.
- Dedicated spaces include a Family Consultation Room for meetings between families and care teams and a Family Lounge with kitchenette and comfortable seating.
Medical Team & Expertise
- Staffed by board-certified pediatric intensive care physicians and pediatric residents available 24/7.
- Supported by a highly specialized team: intensive care nurses respiratory therapists pediatric pharmacists physical therapists child life specialists and care management professionals.
- The unit is co-located on the second floor of the north wing of the Iowa Methodist Medical Center/Blank Childrens Hospital campus.
Family-Centered Approach
- Accommodations encourage family presence: pull-out beds recliners in rooms and private bathrooms enable caregivers to stay overnight.
- The Family Lounge and Consultation Room offer dedicated spaces for families to gather rest and meet privately with the care team.

Responsibilities
Provides and coordinates nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process. Completes documentation to assure an accurate record of patients care. Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgments and maintains responsibility for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients. Collaborates with physicians and other professionals in planning and implementing care within hospital policy and legal limitations. Assesses needs of patients and families provides appropriate teaching to facilitate discharge planning and makes the necessary referrals to community agencies to provide continuity of care. Demonstrates professional development by keeping abreast of current nursing practice and healthcare trends. Utilizes a holistic approach (considering physical psych/social spiritual educational safety and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned service area. Delegates patient care based on clinical assessment and within scope of practice. Demonstrates the ability to consistently meet the department work schedule. Consistently delivers high quality care demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required on assigned unit in accordance with established policies and procedures and standards of care. Demonstrates initiative to improve quality of care patient and employee safety and customer service. Balances team and individual responsibilities participates in peer review seeks involvement in organizational initiatives and committees.
Qualifications
Education:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or IA Board of Nursing approved nursing program.
License(s)/Certification(s):
- Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa
Experience:
- Minimum of six months acute RN experience.
