PRIMARY FUNCTION:

identification and remediation of students communication skills.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Possesses or qualifies for licensure with the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Preferred Certificate of Clinical Competence from ASHA.
  2. Proficiency in assessing students communication skills and ability to interpret test results meaningfully.
  3. Ability to design implement and evaluate a comprehensive program appropriate to the educational needs of the communicatively impaired student.
  4. Knowledge of local state and national regulations relative to the speech-language impaired.
  5. Proficiency in public speaking and written communication to express and/or exchange ideas.
  6. Proficiency in the use of a variety of instructional technology and knowledge of basic augmentative and alternative communication systems.
  7. Emotionally mature objective and sensitive to people and their concerns.
    Ability to work independently manage time efficiently and maintain good working relationships with students families staff co-workers and community agencies.
  8. Strong understanding/appreciation of speech and language differences vs. disorders.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Implement screening and/or referral procedures to identify students needing speech-language evaluation including conducting state-mandated universal hearing screenings
  2. Conduct thorough speech and language evaluations as part of the eligibility determination process
  3. Share written reports and recommendations with the eligibility committee and participate in eligibility determination
  4. Develop and maintain students Individualized Education Program (IEP) including determining appropriate goals implementing therapy maintaining records and monitoring/reporting on progress
  5. Consult and collaborate with school faculty/staff - attend all required meetings facilitate within the classroom and provide in-service education on topics relevant to communication development and impairment.
  6. Maintain confidentiality in all matters and take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
  7. Maintain appropriate state licensure
  8. Demonstrate good attendance and punctuality and respond to all correspondence in a professional and timely manner.
  9. Billing Medicaid as appropriate for services rendered to students.
  10. Ensure awareness of deadlines for billing eligibility IEP completion and progress reports among others.
  11. Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities respecting the worth dignity and individual differences of others.
  12. Comply with and support school division policies regulations and procedures.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Exceptional Student Services and/or the Principal.

Physical demands:

  1. Light work lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.
  2. Stand walk use hands reach with hands and arms stoop kneel or crouch.
  3. Travel throughout the school and to divisionwide meetings is required.
  4. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities; subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  5. Regular contact with staff members and administrators is required.
  6. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

EVALUATION:

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of licensed personnel.
