What you will be doing:
Join the Central Region Aviation Design Group and gain on-the-job training in aviation design! Youll assist a Project Manager in developing federally funded improvement projects for state-owned airports in central and western Alaska. Responsibilities include negotiating engineering consultant contracts reviewing project designs for quality and compliance coordinating technical issues and managing project scopes budgets and schedules. Youll also provide guidance on federal and state airport design standards.

The Central Region Aviation Design Group designs improvements for over 70 state-owned airports many serving isolated communities reliant on air travel for essential services like medical care supplies and transportation. As a Consultant Coordinator youll support a Project Manager in planning designing and delivering projects that enhance these vital airports and improve the lives of Alaskans.

The working environment you can expect:
This position resides in the DOT&PF Central Region Headquarters building at 4111 Aviation Avenue located on the shore of the beautiful Lake Hood Seaplane Base near Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage Alaska and is easily accessible by a paved multi-use path and bus routes 40 and 65. The standard work week is 37.5 hours with schedule options that allow additional days off. The Department also has a flexible telework policy to allow employees to perform their job duties at an alternate location. Travel is occasionally necessary rarely overnight and may include flying to remote communities in small single-engine aircraft.
Who we are looking for:
Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with the core competencies of:
Bachelors degree with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
Two years of engineering architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Or:
A bachelors degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
AND
Two years of engineering architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitutions:
Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering architecture or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree.
Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).
Engineering Associate:
Eight years of progressively responsible work experience in engineering land surveying or architecture of which one year was as an Engineering Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitution:
ABET accredited college or technical school courses in engineering architecture land surveying or a closely related curriculum may be substituted for the non-specific required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month). A bachelors degree with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET may substitute for four years of the non-specific required experience.
Engineer/Architect 1:
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect.
Note: Positions in this class require professional registration as either an Engineer or an Architect. The employer will designate which professional field is required for each position.
Special Note:
Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Engineering Assistant 3 Engineering Associate or Engineer/Architect 1 level depending on the applicants training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at a lower level promotion to the higher level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
