What Youll Do

Serves as the Senior Chemical Technical Authority for UPF processes. Provides leadership guidance and technical direction to engineering staff during the Commissioning and First Use to begin normal operations. Integrates and coordinates inputs from multiple technical disciplines; resolving conflicts when necessary. Provides engineering judgement for changes to the design or technical basis as hazardous materials are introduced into the as a mentor and internal technical consultant.

Chemical engineering support includes participation in designs ranging from scope definition feasibility and conceptual studies and preliminary/detailed designs. Tasks may include review evaluation and oversight of Engineering deliverables (process testing process design information analyses and calculations). Will also include interpreting preparing reviewing and/or summarizing various reports and data. Promoting and leading the advanced understanding and application of technical principles theories and concepts in the engineering field. May represent Y-12 in discussing complex issues with National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB).

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico the Washington Accord or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET. Requires a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience.
  • In addition the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e. Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following the interim newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. (Ref. DOE O 426.2A)

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree (or higher) in Chemical Engineering
  • Over 15 years of progressive engineering experience in Uranium chemical processing
  • Experience with Y-12 facilities procedures and programs
  • Demonstrated skill in effective planning writing organization communication schedule compliance and management of technical issues

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

This position may require entry into the Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712) which requires successful competition of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
