Special Education Teacher

PK-6

Full-time 0.5 FTE

Position Available: January 2026

SUMMARY: Under direction of the principal and special education director provides instructional support to students with disabilities and general classroom teachers who are served through the following programs: Hearing and Vision Autism (ASD) Emotional Impairments (EI) Learning Disabilities (LD) Otherwise Health Impaired (OHI) Speech and Language (SL) Physical Disabilities and Cognitive Impairments (CI). Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Qualifications: Michigan elementary teacher certification with special education and early childhood education endorsement (ZA or ZS) Cognitive Impairment (SA) Emotional Impairment (SE) Learning Disabilities (SM) or Autism (SV). Must meet State of Michigan certification and highly qualified requirements.

  • Meets highly qualified requirements.
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate
  • Special Education endorsement in LD CI and or EI special education
  • Effective communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work as an effective team member with parents diagnostic staff teachers and administrators.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties as assigned)

  • Planning and implementing remedial instruction in the students area(s) of disability.
  • Planning instruction and/or adoption of the general education curriculum to enable students to benefit from general education experiences.
  • Builds trust and confidence with students curriculum lessons and special ed programs and teaching methods.
  • Maintains the physical environment of the classroom for organization and presentation purposes.
  • Instructs individuals and groups on Special Education skill areas.
  • Monitors student progress in and outside resource room.
  • Modifies curriculum.
  • Maintains contact with parents of students.
  • Evaluates student progress base on work output and observation determine goals objectives and directions.
  • Prepares report cards educational records IEPC forms classroom observation records and other forms.
  • Participates in Special Education Committee and staff meetings.
  • Administers testing evaluations.
  • Provides both direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and general classroom teachers.
  • Serves as liaison between school staff members and school administration including special education supervisor.
  • Prepares for Educational Management Team/IEP team meetings and coordinates case management.
  • Interprets both formal informal and classroom-based assessment for students to make instructional decisions.
  • Collects data on student performance so as to improve student outcomes and direct instruction.
  • Selects and adapts materials to assist students with disabilities to access the general education curriculum.
  • Participates in professional development activities designed to advance teacher knowledge in the areas of instruction best practices differentiated instruction changes in educational policy and other information as may be necessary to effective classroom instruction and programming for students with disabilities.
  • Supervises and plans for the continuing professional development of paraeductors assigned to students with disabilities.

This is a sedentary position with occasional standing and walking. The position requires the ability to remain stationary for at least 50% of the time. The position further requires the ability to constantly use equipment such as a computer copy machine calculator etc. The position further requires the ability to communicate both orally and written with district constituents. The position requires the ability to lift up to ten pounds frequently
