Utility Technician l
The Utility Technician I is responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the municipal water wastewater and stormwater infrastructure. This position is responsible for ensuring the municipal water wastewater and stormwater systems operate in accordance with environmental legislation and approvals. This is an entry-level technician position with the opportunity to advance where additional levels of certification are achieved.
This position is safety sensitive.
May consider a candidate who has graduated from a the Nait Water and Wastewater Technician Program who does not have qualified hours. Able to receive level 1 certification within 1 year of experience. The candidate in this situation would be a Lab ll until the 1 year work experience is completed and then qualified as a Utility Tech l.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operation and Maintenance of Municipal Water and Wastewater Utility (70%)
- Maintains the day-to-day operation and maintenance of municipal water treatment and distribution wastewater treatment and collection and storm management ponds in accordance with environmental approvals and regulations.
- Inspects reservoir facilities pump houses lift stations and storm management facilities and their associated control and alarm systems and record readings. Maintains and updates applicable records for all operations.
- Monitors water and wastewater quality including collecting water and wastewater samples for analysis.
- Installs removes repairs reads and records or calibrates commercial and residential water meters.
- Maintains and repairs pumping equipment of pump houses lift stations together with the instrumentation electrical systems and controls related to such equipment.
- Flushes cleans and maintains water lines sanitary sewer mains and facilities including hydrants and valves associated with such systems.
- Inspects and maintains sanitary manholes water valves meter chambers below ground vaults and storm outfall structures.
- Monitors and operates wastewater stabilization ponds and sewage flow equipment.
- Maintains yards and properties associated with municipal water wastewater storm water facilities including working alongside and collaborating with contractors.
- Operates and maintains all public bulk water truck fill stations.
- Installs maintains and repairs municipal water and sewage lines hydrants and services as directed.
- Operates maintains and repairs equipment used for utility functions as required.
- Ensures that all construction and landscape projects are completed to scope including restoring customer property after any land disruption.
Administration (20%)
- Ensures applicable records and documents for all utility operations are maintained and updated. Prepares reports collects documentation and researches activities.
- Participates in the development of effective preventative maintenance programs and operating guidelines for each utility system.
- In cooperation with the Utility Technician II and III ensures the Utility Supervisor is regularly updated on the status of the various systems and recommends repair and/or replacement strategies for the various systems.
- Maintains appropriate records in accordance with environmental approvals and regulations.
- Installs or terminates water or wastewater services to customers as per instruction from superior and by policy.
- Maintains inventory of meters valves and other water/wastewater repair components.
Other Related Duties (10%)
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Participates in the on-call rotation schedule.
- Adheres to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.
- Adheres to all of Sturgeon Countys policies bylaws procedures and processes as well as align work to the Sturgeon County values.
KNOWLEDGE EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS SKILLS ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE
The following are required in this position:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Certification in Level I Water Distribution and Level I Wastewater Collection.
- Valid Class 5 Drivers License.
- Ability to read follow and understand processes procedures and policies to perform work in accordance with expectations.
- Ability to apply a forward-thinking approach while working to ensure that processes are efficient and operating as intended.
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally and politely verbally with others.
- Problem-solving skills to address day-to-day issues that may arise.
- Ability to take initiative be independent resourceful work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work in a team environment or independently.
- Well-developed customer service skills.
- Proficiency when using all Microsoft Office Programs (Excel Word PowerPoint and Outlook).
- Ability to maintain accurate records.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
- This position participates in the on-call rotation schedule.
- Work is conducted at County worksites and will be exposed to various weather conditions outdoor elements and terrain.
- This is a safety sensitive position.
- The working environment is deadline driven and involves multitasking and managing priorities.
- This position may require heavy lifting of up to 50 pounds (24 kilograms) along with frequent squatting bending twisting and climbing.
