TheCity of Oxnardis seeking motivatedMaintenance Worker Trainees to join our team. This entry-level position performs a wide range of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance repair and customer service duties across multiple City departments including Environmental Resources Housing Parks and Wastewater. Employees assigned to this role support City operations by maintaining public facilities grounds equipment and infrastructure while providing safe efficient and courteous service to residents and the general public.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This classification is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker in that it provides semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance work.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED / SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Receives close supervision and specific direction regarding assignments and deadlines.
WORK SCHEDULE (Environmental Resources):Employees generally work a 4/10 schedule with days and hours of the week varying depending on assignment. Schedules are subject to change depending on operational needs. Depending on the work assignment staff may be assigned to a shift that is outside the standard work addition this position may be required to be available to work additional hours in response to peaks in workloads and changes in department needs.
WORK SCHEDULE (Housing):The normal work week is on a 9/80 schedule; 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Thursday with alternating Fridays off. Depending on the work assignment staff may be assigned to a shift that is outside the standard work hours including addition this position may be required to be available to work additional hours in response to peaks in workloads and changes in department needs. This position is governed by overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay.
WORK SCHEDULE (Parks):The normal work week is on a 5/40 schedule; 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM Monday through Friday and one assigned weekend shift. Depending on the work assignment staff may be assigned to a shift that is outside the standard work hours including addition this position may be required to be available to work additional hours in response to peaks in workloads and changes in department needs. This position is governed by overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay.

Depending on the work assignment staff may be assigned to a shift that is outside the standard work addition this position may be required to be available to work additional hours in response to peaks in workloads and changes in department needs. Essential Functions

Performs semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance and operations work in support of City departments or maintenance function; selects proper maintenance tools supplies and equipment for assignment; performs work following established safety policies and procedures.
Operates and maintains assigned equipment tools and supplies; performs basic inspections to ensure safe operating conditions; cleans and performs preventative maintenance; and monitors need for replacement or advanced repair/maintenance work.
Plans monitors and reviews inventory and supply needs; places orders or requests based on requirements.
Maintains activity logs records work orders and related reports.
Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE:
Positions assigned to Environmental Resources may be responsible for:
Repair and refurbish waste containers owned by the City;
Sort daily work orders for delivery or repairs for residential or commercial containers and lids.
Operate various hand tools (drill hammer wire cutters etc)
Knowledge of the operation of a pressure washer
Follow all City safety policies and procedures
Lift up to 50 lbs
Communicate with Supervisor or Leads concerning delays unsafe sites accidents or other maintenance issues
Provide excellent customer service to the Citys residents
Perform other duties as assigned
Positions assigned to Housing may be responsible for:
- Maintain plantings grounds and infrastructure in public housing and facility grounds.
- Water mow weed trim edge renovate aerate and fertilize lawns; weed prune mulches feed fertilize and irrigate shrubs trees and flower beds; mix and apply fertilizer and may apply pesticides and herbicides; install and maintain irrigation equipment and sprinklers; clean maintain and pick up rubbish and debris from landscaped areas paved areas paths and walks and other facilities;
- Participate in the removal of graffiti; perform rodent abatement activities.
- Perform preventative maintenance on equipment tools and related safety equipment; drive vehicles required to transport materials tools and equipment; operate commercial motorized equipment such as gang mowers and edgers tractors front end loaders sprayers graffiti removal apparatus and other related equipment;
- Operate a variety of hand and power tools such as hand mowers edgers blowers hedge trimmers weed eaters chain saws rakes shovels hoes brooms and other maintenance tools.
- Maintain records of work performed; enter data properly.
- Perform duties in a professional and safe manner. Follow all safety and personnel rules policies and processes.
- Assist and train less experienced personnel; understand implement and train personnel in proper safety procedures.
- Respond to questions and concerns from the general public; provide information as is appropriate and resolve complaints.
- Demonstrate a full understanding of applicable policies procedures work methods and safety requirements associated with assigned duties.
Positions assigned to Parks may be responsible for:
- Maintain plantings grounds and infrastructure in municipal parks street landscapes recreation areas mall areas public housing and facility grounds.
- Water mow weed trim edge renovate aerate and fertilize lawns; weed prune mulches feed fertilize and irrigate shrubs trees and flower beds; mix and apply fertilizer and may apply pesticides and herbicides; install and maintain irrigation equipment and sprinklers; clean maintain and pick up rubbish and debris from landscaped areas paved areas paths and walks median traffic islands fields courts and other facilities;
- Assist in installation moving and repair of playground and related recreational equipment; maintain and prepare athletic fields; grades fill and shape baseball diamonds; oversee and participate in the removal of graffiti; perform rodent abatement activities.
- Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles equipment tools and related safety equipment; drive vehicles required to transport materials tools and equipment; operate commercial motorized equipment such as gang mowers and edgers tractors front end loaders sprayers graffiti removal apparatus and other related equipment;
- Operate a variety of hand and power tools such as hand mowers edgers blowers hedge trimmers weed eaters chain saws rakes shovels hoes brooms and other maintenance tools.

Safely operate hand and power tools under supervision.
Support experienced technicians in equipment installations repairs and adjustments.
Perform scheduled greasing and lubrication of pumps motors bearings and mechanical equipment.
Wash and clean fleet vehicles trucks trailers and heavy equipment using pressure washers hoses brushes and cleaning agents.
Assist with irrigation system checks and minor repairs under supervision.
Follow safety protocols including lockout/tagout confined space entry and PPE use.
Participate in on-the-job training and crew meetings as assigned.
Assist with surface preparation including cleaning sanding grinding and masking.
Apply primers paints and protective coatings using brushes rollers or spray equipment under supervision.
Organize and maintain stock rooms and supply areas
Hose and maintain plant areas
Support Wastewater Operators with non-certified duties
Other duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
The following are the minimumqualifications necessary for entry into the classification:
EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma or GED
EXPERIENCE:
- Two (2) years of maintenance experience related to assignment.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
- Valid California Class C Drivers License with a satisfactory driving record may be required for some positions.
Depending on assignment some positions may require:
- Valid California Fork Lift License
- Licensing as a qualified pesticide applicator
