ABOUT THE CLPNA

The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) is a non-profit regulatory organization. The CLPNA exists to protect Alberta healthcare users. Our first responsibility is to the public. We regulate the profession of Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) setting and maintaining standards to ensure the public receives safe competent and ethical healthcare services. Our commitment to public protection and regulatory excellence underscores everything we do. The CLPNA has partnered with the Ministry of Primary and Preventative Health Services to lead the development and the continued operations of the Alberta Health Care Aide (HCA) Alberta HCAs are not a regulated profession although HCAs will become regulated under the Health Professions Act in the future.

EMPLOYMENT TERM

This is a full-time permanent appointment. The position is eligible for hybrid work with a requirement to work in our Edmonton office on a regular basis.

THE ROLE

Reporting to the Executive Officer Registration and Education the Director of Education leads the strategic direction operations and performance of the Education Department ensuring alignment with the CLPNAs mandate to protect the public. The role is accountable for advancing program approval processes and education standards and indicators and for representing the CLPNA in provincial and national education forums. Through strong relationships with government post-secondary institutions and other partners the Director supports informed timely and evidence-based regulatory decision-making.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strategic Leadership and Department Oversight: Provide strategic direction and operational leadership for the Education Department including development and oversight of the departmental workplan and budget to ensure alignment with the CLPNAs mandate strategic priorities and regulatory objectives.
  • Education Standards and Program Approval: Lead and continuously improve education standards and indicators and program approval processes to ensure compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements and support consistent evidence-informed decision-making.
  • People Leadership and Performance Management: Recruit lead and develop Education Department staff establishing clear expectations managing performance and fostering a high-performing accountable team culture.
  • Government Council and Executive Support: Initiate and support government consultations related to program approval oversee preparation of Council briefing notes and provide expert advice to the Executive Officer and senior leadership to support informed governance and regulatory decisions.
  • Committee Engagement and External Representation: Co-chair Practical Nurse (PN) and HCA educator meetings and work with educator leadership to set agendas aligned with regulatory objectives; collaborate with and attend the Education Standards Advisory Committee (ESAC) and work with the Chair and Vice-Chair to set agendas aligned with program review/approval objectives; and represent the CLPNA in provincial and national forums to promote regulatory clarity collaboration and continuous quality improvement.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication skills including the ability to convey complex regulatory concepts clearly and diplomatically. They will apply sound analytical judgment and strategic thinking within a legislative and regulatory framework and manage multiple priorities effectively while meeting timelines and maintaining a high degree of accuracy.

The Director of Education will exhibit professionalism discretion and strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and sustain effective relationships with staff educators government and external partners. Demonstrated leadership capability awareness of system-level and political factors and knowledge of legislation regulations and policies impacting the LPN and/or HCA professions are essential to success in this role.

EXPERIENCE

  • Masters degree in business administration health adult learning or a related field. Equivalencies will be considered.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a mid- to senior-level role within health nursing education or a related field preferably within a regulatory environment. Experience with program approval accreditation curriculum review audit or regulatory compliance is preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory or people leadership experience.
  • Professional nursing designation with an active practice permit is considered an asset.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated PC/computer skills with solid understanding of MS Office.
  • Must speak read and write English fluently.
  • Satisfactory professional and criminal reference checks.
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.
