Job Summary

The Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation (TIBI) offers a highly interdisciplinary Summer Internship Program designed to immerse students in cutting-edge biomedical research innovation and translation. Our unique approach brings together researchers with expertise in biomedical imaging biosensing biomechanics engineered and synthetic biology nano- and biomaterials artificial intelligence and informatics creating an environment where students engage with real-world challenges at the intersection of engineering biology and impact.

Throughout the summer interns will:

  • Work closely with TIBI researchers innovators and staff
  • Participate in hands-on projects aligned with their selected track
  • Attend workshops on research translation scientific writing communication and professional development
  • Collaborate with peers across disciplines through seminars and group activities

Interns will apply to and participate in one of three tracks:
Biomedical Research Innovation & Entrepreneurship or Marketing.

Internship Tracks

Biomedical Research Track

Designed for students interested in hands-on biomedical research and technology development.

Interns will:

  • Collaborate with scientists across multidisciplinary teams
  • Assist with experimental design data collection and data analysis
  • Document experimental procedures and results in lab notebooks
  • Participate in research discussions and brainstorming sessions
  • Contribute to reports presentations and project updates

Ideal for students pursuing careers in research engineering medicine or graduate study.


Biomedical Research Program & Training (8 Weeks)

Interns participating in the Biomedical ResearchTrackwill take part in aSpecialized Techniques Research and Translation Seminar Series designed to provide hands-on exposure to core tools and methodologies in biomedical engineering and translational research:

  • Week 1:Orientation & Safety Training
  • Week 2:Cell Culture
  • Week 3:Quantitative & Mechanical Techniques
  • Week 4:Microscopy
  • Week 5:Microfluidics 3D Printing & Biofabrication
  • Week 6:Artificial Intelligence in Bioengineering
  • Week 7:Pitch Idea Contest
  • Week 8:Final Presentations



Note: Training structure and activities for the Marketing and Innovation & Entrepreneurship tracks differ and are tailored to each tracks focus area.

Marketing Track

Designed for students interested in marketing communications and science storytelling within a research-driven organization.

Interns will:

  • Support marketing and communications initiatives promoting TIBIs research and mission
  • Assist with content creation for digital platforms newsletters press releases and outreach materials
  • Translate complex scientific concepts into clear engaging messaging
  • Support social media strategy content scheduling audience engagement and analytics
  • Assist with website updates and backend maintenance
  • Support promotion and coordination of virtual and in-person events

Marketing Program & Training (8 Weeks)

Marketing interns will follow a structured training experience that builds practical skills while supporting active campaigns:

  • Week 1: Onboarding brand foundations and marketing tools
  • Week 2: Content strategy and science storytelling
  • Week 3: Social media best practices and community engagement
  • Week 4: Visual and multimedia content creation
  • Week 5: Campaign support event promotion and outreach
  • Week 6: Analytics performance measurement and optimization
  • Week 7: Intern-led marketing project development
  • Week 8: Final presentation and portfolio development

Ideal for students interested inmarketing communications digital media science writing or public engagement.

Innovation & Entrepreneurship Track

Focused on translating scientific discoveries into real-world biomedical solutions.

Interns will:

  • Learn about TIBIs technology platforms and innovation pipeline
  • Conduct market research and competitive landscape analyses
  • Support impact assessments and quantitative evaluations of innovation potential
  • Learn fundamentals of biotech product lifecycles and intellectual property (IP) development
  • Assist with ROI estimation and technology valuation
  • Work in a startup-style biotech environment under innovation leadership

Innovation and Entrepreneurial Program & Training (8 Weeks)

The Innovation & Entrepreneurship Internship Program provides a structured hands-on learning experience designed to build foundational skills in translational science commercialization and startup development. Interns will gain exposure to the end-to-end process of moving ideas from the lab to the marketplace while supporting active innovation initiatives.

Summer Program Schedule

  • Week 1: Understanding the translational process
  • Week 2: Assessing the translational readiness of your project
  • Week 3: Estimating project costs and financial feasibility
  • Week 4: Protecting your ideas: introduction to intellectual property (IP)
  • Week 5: Valuing patents and early-stage technologies
  • Week 6: Building a business plan for scientific innovation
  • Week 7: Pitching to investors and stakeholder communication
  • Week 8: Raising capital and the basics of startup valuation

This program is ideal for students interested in innovation entrepreneurship technology commercialization business development venture creation or translational research and offers practical experience at the intersection of science business and impact.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate student at a community college or university
  • Undergraduate applicants must be Sophomores Juniors or Seniors at the time of application
  • Prior research experience is not required
  • Demonstrated interest in science technology engineering or mathematics (STEM)
  • Ability to commit to the full duration of the program

Program Dates

  • Cohort: One Summer Junior Biomedical Intern cohort
  • Duration: 8 weeks
  • Session Dates: June 22 2026 August 15 2026

Compensation

  • This internship is paid via a one-time stipend issued upon successful completion of the full program

Location & Work Authorization

  • Internship will be conducted in person at TIBIs state-of-the-art laboratory in Woodland Hills California
  • Relocation housing and mileage are not provided
  • College Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is supported for eligible students
  • CPT eligibility and authorization must be obtained through the students academic institution prior to the internship start date
  • TIBI is unable to sponsor or assume sponsorship of employment visas (including H-1B OPT or other work visas) at this time
  • Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States
