Description

The San Diego State University Department of History and Behner Stiefel Center for Brazilian Studies seek to hire a tenure-track assistant professor with expertise in History of Brazil from 1500 onwards. Candidates scholarly expertise should be firmly grounded in the study of Brazil with a preference for environmental history human rights and/or social movements. Apply via PageUp by January 24 2026.

The position will be a joint appointment between the Department of History and the Behner Stiefel Center for Brazilian History Department has established strengths in social cultural public military and global history. The Behner Stiefel Center for Brazilian Studies focuses on the interdisciplinary examination of globally relevant issues in Brazil with an emphasis on social and environmental justice. We seek candidates whose work complements and engages with one or more of these areas of excellence. Candidates should have the ability to teach broadly on Latin America at all levels (from lower-division GE to graduate courses) and/or to place Brazil in a global comparative framework such as the Americas or the Atlantic World. Candidates should articulate how they would contribute to the Brazil Center and mention any relevant experience with program building.   • A record of original research / scholarly / creative accomplishments and demonstrated capacity to a) develop a vigorous and independent program of research / scholarship / creative activity b) teach graduate and undergraduate courses; and c) engage in both campus and professional service activities.

  • Demonstration of past accomplishments and/or future plans in at least two (2) or more of the Building on Inclusive Excellence criteria.

Required qualifications by date of hire

  • Terminal degree in History or a related field with all degree requirements met.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise in the discipline and its methodologies

  • Record of publications presentations and/or funding

  • Demonstrated proficiency in interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches

  • Potential for securing extramural funding

  • University-level teaching experience

  • Preparation for teaching students from diverse backgrounds

  • Ability to direct advanced undergraduate student research

  • Ability to direct graduate student research

  • Understanding of the mission and goals of the academic unit and SDSU

  • Experience with program building and community engagement

The minimum salary for this position is based on the current CSU salary schedule and may be revised based on contract collective bargaining. The anticipated salary range is from $83000 to $880000. Salary placement will be based on the selected candidates qualifications and experience and salaries higher than the published maximums may be offered in limited circumstances.
