Description of the Position: (Purpose of the Position):

Peer Advisors are an integral part of the Piper Center for Vocation and Career. By supporting their peers career and vocational exploration these student leaders play a critical role in advancing the Piper Centers work in addition to providing fellow students with guidance and help to navigate career-related resources.

Transferable Skills:

  • Oral and written communication
  • Listening advising coaching and providing feedback
  • Promotion and marketing of Piper Center events
  • Organization coordination and management of programs/projects/initiatives

Duties and Responsibilities:

Peer Advisors welcome students to the Piper Center and assist them with a range of activities:

  • Training students on Handshake the Piper Centers online job and internship portal
  • Assisting students with resumes and cover letters
  • Helping students navigate their search for jobs internships and volunteer opportunities
  • Aiding in the development and execution of career fairs information sessions industry expert workshops and classroom presentations
  • Coaching students on how to network and how to utilize networking resources
  • Working with students to identify electronic and print resources for their vocational needs

Peer Advisors also serve as Piper Center ambassadors promoting our events/services and encouraging other students to visit the Piper Center and make use of resources including coaching appointments and drop-in hours. Peer Advisors work together to staff drop-in hour shifts from 8:30 AM - 5 PM Monday through Friday.

Additionally each Peer Advisor serves as Project Assistant(s) for a variety of special projects related to coaching areas such as on-campus recruiting social impact and nonprofit programming and career exploration for STEM fields.

Qualifications: (Education/Experience/Skills)

We are looking for the following traits and skills in a Peer Advisor:

  • Current St. Olaf student must be a rising junior or rising senior
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including self-motivation initiative and the ability to complete work independently
  • Ability to interact professionally with a wide range of stakeholders including other students staff college leadership faculty alumni and employers
  • Strong written communication skills including the ability to edit and proofread written materials
  • Ability to work with and welcome students of diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Interest in becoming a student expert to help others explore careers and use the resources of the Piper Center
  • Strong interpersonal and professional communication skills including the ability to listen advise teach and explain
  • Ability to manage high volumes of student walk-in traffic
  • Resourcefulness and skills in creative problem-solving
  • Ability to work a minimum of 6 hours per week including occasional evenings or weekend events
