Job Summary
The Patrol Sergeant provides first line supervision and administration of their police department assigned unit performs crime prevention and law enforcement responsibilities on an assigned shift in patrol preliminary investigation follow up or specialized investigations and performs other related work as required.
Principal Accountabilities
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Provides supervision by assigning work activities providing direction and guidance to subordinates relaying necessary information to oncoming shifts and investigating possible breaches of policy procedures rules and regulations.
Evaluates police officers by reviewing work performed offering feedback and developmental advice evaluating overall performance level and documenting performance.
Prevent crime by explaining and enforcing applicable federal state and local laws and ordinances; mediate disputes; patrol assigned area and responds to calls for service.
Prepares and review reports work schedules and maintains records of police activities and duty assignments.
Conduct criminal investigations by gathering evidence; interview victims and witnesses; interrogate suspects. Submit findings of investigations to management in detailed written reports.
Observes inspects and monitors vehicles traffic signals peoples behavior suspicious activity and subordinates conduct and appearance to determine compliance with applicable laws codes and departmental policies/standards.
Prioritizes and assigns work to personnel including assignments and investigations in order to ensure proper staffing of posts on a day-to-day basis in a manner which provides the most effective level of police protection for the County.
Train and evaluate assigned personnel; assist with training and orientation of new employees; provide training guidance and counseling to assigned personnel; complete employee performance evaluations and reviews as required; promote career development of subordinates.
Performs work per established rules/regulations/post orders/specific instructions; receives general administrative directions.
Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge & Skills
Law enforcement theory principles and practices and their application to a wide variety of services and programs.
Methods and techniques used in providing the full range of law enforcement and crime prevention services and activities including investigation and identification patrol traffic control records management care and custody of persons and property and crime prevention.
Pertinent federal state and local laws codes and regulations including laws governing the apprehension arrest and custody of persons accused of felonies misdemeanors and petty offenses.
Understand interpret apply enforce and make decisions in accordance with applicable federal state and local policies laws and regulations. Judge situations/people accurately.
Effectively use and qualify with law enforcement tools and weapons including firearms batons defensive tactics and other safety equipment.
Operate specialized law enforcement equipment including specialized police vehicles radios video systems and radars.
Undertake and satisfactorily complete required and assigned in-service training programs.
Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Experience & Education
Must have two (2) years of work experience as a Patrol officer work experience preferred Law Enforcement. Supervisor experience preferred.
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by additional college level course work and specialized training in law enforcement criminal justice police science public administration or a related field. An associate or bachelors degree is highly desirable.
Possession of a P.O.S.T. Intermediate Certificate.
Possession of an appropriate valid drivers license.
Possession of CPR and First Aid certifications
Physical Requirements/Working Environment
Place of duty and environmental conditions can be extremely austere harsh and work can be performed under hostile and life-threatening conditions.
Travel
Travel requirements will vary with the assignment.
