This department includes state prisons with custody healthcare and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work

Reporting to a Correctional Housing Unit Manager I this position is responsible for first line supervision of Correctional Officer IIs at a medium custody male correctional facility. This positions responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

1. Assigning lower level custody staff to a particular area/post and evaluating and overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring that the custody security and welfare of offenders is maintained.

2. Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.

3. Managing the facility on occasion of being the highest-ranking custody staff on the premises or the Officer-In-Charge (OIC).

4. Ensuring the staff are fully trained and that proper conduct actions and procedures are being followed.

5. Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance health and safety of offenders.

6. Communicating effective instruction/direction during drills searches and in emergencies situations.

7. Responding to emergency situations such as: distress codes escapes and transportation of offenders.

8. Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders offender living areas and work areas for contraband.

9. Investigating and taking action when appropriate regarding security issues incidents disputes and complaints.

10. Preparing reviewing reports and completing performance evaluations on subordinate staff.

(Salary Range: $37782 - $66120)

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) withState Benefits. The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

The salary grade for this position is NC08. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.

About Warren Correctional Institution:

Warren Correctional Institution is a mixed custody facility that houses minimum medium and close custody offenders. The current capacity of Warren CI is 850 male offenders with most offenders being housed in medium custody. Offenders at Warren Correctional Institution may work at the Correction Enterprises Janitorial Products Plant gaining marketable job skillsand self-confidence participating in themanufacturing of soap and cleaning products.

Offenders at Warren Correctional Institution may also participate in vocational training and educational courses to earn their HiSet/GED. They may also participate in the At Both Ends of the Leash (ABEL) program which provides an opportunity for offenders to train service animals for individuals with medical diagnoses or physical disabilities.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer OR two years of experience as Correctional Officer II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
