JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Husbandry Supervisor provides hands-on supervision to the day-to-day husbandry and animal care operation in a specific area of a large laboratory animal resource program. This position directs technician husbandry cage wash and operational duties as necessary to manage the workload in all assigned areas.
ResponsibilitiesDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans organizes and assigns daily/weekly work schedules to husbandry staff.
- Monitors and directs duties for husbandry and cage wash staff; assuring all caging and housing facilities and husbandry conditions are compliant with the federal standards and guidelines and consistent with generally accepted standards.
- Conducts daily inspections of animal facilities to ensure animal health and housing standards and the maintenance of required sanitation and facility standards.
- Assists the Coordinator for Training and Quality Assurance in maintaining staff proficiency in animal care and facility procedures.
- Maintains appropriate records files inventories and logbooks.
- Advises the Director of potential problems concerning areas of animal care employee performance or facility issues while suggesting corrections and improvements in these areas.
- Performs other related duties as required.
QualificationsMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:High School Diploma or GED (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE: Six (6) years of combined education (life sciences related coursework) and experience working with animals in a research setting; OR an Associates Degree in Biology Animal Science Life Sciences or related area and four (4) years of experience working with animals in a research setting OR a Bachelors degree in Biology Animal Science Life Science or related area and two (2) years of experience working with animals in a research setting; ORCertification at the Lab Animal Technologist (LATg) level and a minimum of four (4) years of experience working with animals in a research setting. A minimum of two (2)years of supervisory experience is required.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:American Association for Laboratory Animal Science at minimum Lab Animal Technician level (CERTIFICATION REQUIRED). Must obtain Lab Animal Technologist (LATg) certification within twelve (12) months of employment.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of animal caretaking methods and procedures; computer proficiency
- Knowledge of animal welfare regulations and guidelines (USDA NIH AAALAC).
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to evaluate staff to ensure all requirements of a task are correctly completed.
- Ability to train and evaluate the proficiency of staff.
- Capable of distributing workload according to staff proficienciesand staff level.
WORK SCHEDULE:This position may be occasionally required to work weekends.
