The Public Works Department is actively seeking a Senior Landscape Architect.

This is technical work managing large-scale and complex City projects. This will include designing developing reviewing inspecting and overseeing design projects for conformance and adherence to development principles and practices. This position will provide construction inspection including grading and drainage hardscape landscape utility coordination City buildings electrical and plumbing infrastructure. Work requires an understanding and application of the theories principles and practices of landscape architecture usually gained through degree granting schools or an equivalent level of practical knowledge gained through experience. Work will include oversight and analysis of consulting and contracting budgets to ensure efficient use of government funds. The work is specialized due to changing site conditions City needs and aging infrastructure. Contacts with others require skills in understanding and/or influencing people and are important in providing client services including skills of persuasiveness assertiveness and sensitivity to others point of view that are required to influence behavior change an opinion or turn a situation around. The work is covered by clearly defined policies and principles where the worker is required to exercise independent judgment. Solutions to complex problems will need to be determined as conditions arise with the work involving a variety of situations facts or circumstances requiring analytical and constructive reasoning. The work is performed in an office and field environment where there are some risks and hazards but they are known somewhat predictable and controllable. Operates a motor vehicle personal computers using word processing spreadsheet database and other related software engineering scales distance measuring devices and other standard office equipment. The physical demands consist of driving sitting standing walking and lifting objects weighing up to twenty (20) pounds. The work is performed under limited supervision where assignments are subject to established procedures practices precedents methods techniques standards and/or well-defined policies and the worker plans and organizes the work and determines their own priorities with the work being reviewed usually after the fact in terms of quality volume timeliness and for adherence to established methods standards and policies.

  • Plans designs and supervises improvements at different sites.
  • Manages budgets for large-scale construction projects.
  • Plans large scale City capital improvement budgets.
  • Analyzes consulting and construction budgets for accuracy and efficiency.
  • Reviews design plans for quality control and consistency with design guidelines and safety and maintenance standards.
  • Prepares landscape and site development plans for projects.
  • Prepares designs and specifications appropriate for bidding projects.
  • Manages design services for landscape architecture and construction projects.
  • Manages and conducts construction inspections.
  • Develops department design standards.
  • Collaborates with architects engineers contractors and the public concerning sites plans codes and ordinances.
  • Prepares and issues reports correspondence and procedures.
  • Coordinates various improvement projects.
  • Prepares fee proposals for project coordination site planning and landscape architect services requested for public facilities.
  • Operates a motor vehicle.
  • Operates personal computersusing word processing spreadsheet database and other related software engineering scales distance measuring devicesand otherstandard office equipment.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the theories principles and practices of landscape architecture.
  • Knowledge of City priorities construction sequencing and budgeting.
  • Knowledge of design software including AutoCAD Adobe CS ArcGIS and MS Office.
  • Knowledge of plant materials related to USDA Zones 8b-9b and native plants.
  • Knowledge of Florida Grades and Standards.
  • Knowledge of native and invasive plant species.
  • Knowledge of Florida Building Code including ADA requirements.
  • Skills in problem solving analysis and creativity.
  • Ability to prepare landscape and site development designs plans and construction oversight.
  • Ability to calculate design and bid requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and work within a fast-paced team environment.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to operate personal computersusing word processing spreadsheet database and other related software engineering scales distance measuring devicesand otherstandard office equipment.
  • Ability to prepare read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.

Open Requirements/Supplemental Information

  • Bachelors degreefrom an accredited college or university in landscape architecture.
  • Seven (7) years of professional experience in Landscape Architecture including experience in a leadership role.
  • Proficiency in design software such as AutoCad Adobe Creative Suite SketchUp GIS etc.
  • Must submit one or more digital examples of construction documents specifications graphic concept plans that illustrate technical and creative abilities.
  • Previous experience improving public facilities - preferred.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:

  • Must possess a Florida Landscape Architect license.

    • Note: If licensed in another state you must secure Florida license within one (1) year of hire.

  • Must possess a valid drivers license at time of application and maintain it during employment in this class.

  • Must qualify for obtain and maintain a City of Jacksonville public driver certification for employment in this class.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • The probationary period for this class is six (6) months.
