Description:

The Emergency Room Technician functions under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. He/she provides non-licensed direct patient care to neonate through geriatric patients. He/she assists the healthcare team by providing personal assistance to patients by caring for the patient equipment and supplies and also by providing clerical and nursing care support services.

Skill Set
Demonstrates essential knowledge and skills when performing/assisting in procedures and treatments.
Performs vital signs on admission and at least every 2 hours or as directed by RN. Documents on EMR and reports results to RN.
Set up low flow O2 by nasal cannula (no application of oxygen)
Replaces O2 removed by patient
Demonstrates appropriate use of pulse oximeter :
- Properly uses different sensors based on age location to be used and
equipment functioning.
Care of the patient with IV fluids.
- Does not disconnect IV fluids.
- Reports to licensed nursing staff any site changes or repetitive pump alarms
Performs capillary blood glucose monitoring and PI accurately documents and reports results to RN in a timely manner.
Performs venipuncture for specimen collection:
- Utilizes techniques to insure patients do no develop unnecessary hematomas and bruising ie direct entering of vein direct pressure for appropriate length of time etc.
- Obtains lab specimens timely and processes specimens to the lab
- Ensures proper labeling of specimen
Collects lab specimens and cultures according to nursing practice standards i.e. (sputum stool urine wound). Ensures proper labeling of specimens.
Transports stable telemetry patients to unit.
Maintains I&O.
Performs EKG on admission as directed.
Demonstrates the ability to recognize and deal with agitated patients and family in a professional manner.
Assist RN in setting up and preparing the patient for:
- Laceration repairs
- Lumbar puncture
- Thoracentesis/paracentesis
- Chest Tube
- Eye Irrigation
- Gastric Lavage
- Application of cast/splints
- Assists with traction
Assembles measures and assist in crutch walking.

Direct Patient Care
Sets up trays; feed patients as needed.
Assures assigned patients receive a diet once determined clinically cleared by the ED physician / primary RN assigned to patient.
Performs hygiene/comfort measures including baths and mouth care.
Turn patients to ensure proper circulation reports any skin breakdown to the attending RN.
Assists with patient admission and discharge and gives assistance to patients to their vehicles.
Transports patients transfers patients and positions patients so that safety and comfort are assured.
Demonstrates appropriate patient transfer techniques i.e. (utilizes correct body mechanics bed to chair/chair to bed/chair to chair or toilet transfer bed to stretcher transfer.
Maintains patient body alignment and positioning i.e. (assist with normal range of motion hip precautions pressure relief of high risk areas heels sacrum scapula hips etc.)
Respectfully completes post mortem care (post mortem medical examiner/autopsy)
Documents and demonstrates restraint care according to policy when performing 1:1/close observation patient monitoring.
- Never leaves patient alone.
- Remains within arms length.
- Reports any problems to RN immediately.
- Monitors patient potential risk factors when performing 1:1 patient monitoring
- / close observation patient monitoring.
Maintains ER tech duties for patient(s)
Interacts with patient(s) during 1:1/close observation
Responsible for all patient comfort measures i.e. blankets pillows call bells etc. and hourly rounding on patients.
Promotes environment/actions to reach/exceed departmental customer service score of % or greater.

Plan of Care
Assigned patients at the beginning of each shift from assigned RN. He/she is responsible to keep RN updated related to the care of the patient reports off to RN when leaving unit and or at the end of shift.

Communicates with patients and families utilizing age and culturally appropriate communication.

Greets patient; prepares patient for exam; responsible for undressing and dressing gathering expected equipment from stock room and obtains linen.
Participates with nursing staff members in an organized and systemic manner of care. Communicates proactively to the health care team changes in patients condition and other relevant information.

Indirect Patient Care
Provides supportive assistance required to facilitate care of the patient in the Emergency Department.
Checks rooms assigned at end of shift empty bedpans and urinals; clear over-bed tables.
Responsible to insure rooms are stocked at shifts end.
Maintains cleans and tracks equipment. Notifies the charge nurse/ manager of malfunctioning or non-functioning equipment and facilitates appropriate process for removing it from the patient care area while retrieving a replacement when appropriate.
Maintains supply of wheelchairs IV poles and oxygen tanks. (In proper location)
Directs requisitions for supplies forms equipment or equipment checks and notifies proper personnel of any malfunctions.
Assures blanket warmer is stocked.
Assures adequate supplies are available for all shifts (monitors suture carts)
Provides a climate conducive to educational experiences for students and new employees.
Obtains 2 hours of Stroke related education yearly and documents them in the ED continuing education book.

Patient Safety
Cooperates with all areas in the admission and transfer of patients throughout the hospital to ensure efficiency.
Interacts professionally and keeps patient care team informed of patient condition.
Hourly rounding on assigned patients.
Collaborates with nursing staff and ancillary departments to become a multidisciplinary health care team whose goal is to provide care that is continuous and well coordinated.
Promotes a safe hospital environment for patients employees visitors and self.

Assures all patients have a correct identifying wristband in place.
Conducts patient rounds every hour to ensure safety assures bed is in low position Bed lock on side rails raised call bell with in reach.
Rounds on other patients while other ER Techs are busy or out of department.
Answers call lights promptly and courteously.
Keeps hallways and other common areas on the unit clear and free of supplies and equipment.
Keeps linen carts utility rooms supply rooms etc. neat and orderly. Linen covered at all times.
Greets visitors patients families and physicians and directs them appropriately.
Demonstrates ability to prevent recognize and report abuse.
Recognizes age-related issues and takes necessary precautions i.e. choking hazards falls etc.
Notifies charge nurse when leaving unit.
Utilizes good body mechanics when lifting pushing or pulling patients or objects
Removes soiled bed linens and makes the bed:
- Disposes of linen and trash appropriately. Assures linen hamper are emptied
prior to end of shift and as needed..
Able to locate and demonstrate appropriate use of safety equipment:
- Gloves latex and latex free
- Masks/eye shields
- Gowns
Adheres to infection control standards specific to patient care.
Maintains isolation precautions where indicated;
- Identifies specific isolation precautions in use (airborne droplet contact) and
specific techniques required (gowns mask - surgical vs. HEPA gloves)
Disposes of supplies appropriately used and unused
Assists in keeping rooms clean and orderly.
Empties bed pans urinals bedside commodes on ongoing basis.
Demonstrates appropriate use of and alternatives to restraints including least restrictive measures.
Acts as a patient advocate and upholds patients rights.
Promotes and maintains a safe clean and orderly environment.
Defers ethical concerns to appropriate resources.

Assists with unit secretary role and responsibilities.
Accurate completion of admissions transfers and discharge records of patients.

Maintains current BCLS/CPR
Performs BCLS/CPR in Code Blue situation.
- Properly uses bag-valve-mask resuscitator (pediatric adult geriatric).

Functions calmly and efficiently in an emergency situation so that the patients immediate needs are addressed.
Retrieves emergency equipment in code situations i.e. code cart IV. Pump EKG Portable O2.
Relocates other patients (when possible) and family members during emergency
Makes rounds on all patients during emergency
Recognizes and initiates Rapid Response as needed per policy.
Recognizes signs and symptoms of stroke and reports such to professional staff.
