The Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) is a diverse state agency dedicated to the safety health and security of Washingtons workers. We help employers meet safety and health standards and inspect workplaces when alerted to hazards. As administrators of the states workers compensation system we are similar to a large insurance company providing medical and limited wage-replacement coverage to workers who suffer job-related injuries and illness. Our rules and enforcement programs also help ensure workers are paid what they are owed that childrens and teens work hours are limited and that consumers are protected from unsound business practices.

Insurance Services is the largest division within the agency and administers one of the premier workers compensation organizations in the nation serving over 3.8 million employees working for 260000 employers.

Within Insurance Service as a part of the Employer Services area the Washington Stay at Work (WSAW) adjudicator contributes to the economic wellbeing of the state by ensuring that timely wage and expense reimbursements are paid to State Fund employers who provide medically approved light duty or transitional work for their injured workers.

The WSAW adjudicator is passionate about the customer experience. This is an entry level position that adjudicates employer reimbursement requests and determines employer eligibility based on criteria established in the Stay at Work (WSAW) statute rules and policies.

Please note:

This position is considered in-training. If hired at the Workers Compensation Adjudicator 1level you will be required to successfully complete the training plan requirements to advance to next level of Workers Compensation Adjudicator 2.

The salary range for each job classification level is as follows:

  • Workers Compensation Adjudicator 1:$3925 to $5271 monthly.
  • Workers Compensation Adjudicator 2:$4542 to $6107 monthly.

Duties

Some of what youll do:

  • Adjudicate to include calculation and payment of Stay at Work wage and expense reimbursements and resolving an assigned workload of requests according to laws policies and statutes specific to Stay at Work benefits.
  • Respond to difficult stressful and sensitive situations effectively communicating unpleasant options calming and assisting customers.
  • Describe the factors considered in making a decision and their relative importance. Identify and consider alternatives before making a decision.
  • Use customer satisfaction as a key measure provide products and services that consistently meet or exceed the needs and expectations of customers.
  • Act as a department liaison to internal customers for the Stay at Work program.
  • Is a subject matter expert for employers on how to access the WSAW program and the benefits specific that program.

Qualifications

Required:

If Hired at the WCA 1 level:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • AND
  • Three years of experience working in insurance claims claims/insurance adjusting claims investigations or paramedical occupations.

OR

  • Three years of experience in adjudicating workers or crime victims compensation insurance claims or adjudication of time loss payments.

OR

  • Equivalent education/experience.

If Hired at the WCA 2 level:

  • Successful completion of the Workers Compensation Adjudicator 2 Apprenticeship program.

AND

  • Three years of experience working with insurance claims claims/insurance adjusting claims investigations or paramedical occupations.

OR

  • A Bachelors degree.

AND

  • One year of experience in adjudicating workers or crime victims compensation insurance claims or adjudication of time loss payments.

OR

  • Equivalent education/experience.

  • Process Improvement: Use project management (Lean) and problem-solving methods to improve processes.
  • Workers Compensation: Administer benefits using Washingtons workers compensation laws (Revised Code of Washington Title 51) Medical Aid Rules (Washington Administrative Code 296) Claims Administration Policies and Procedures and case law.
